UBC BSN September 2017

Published

Hi Everyone!

I've been searching for a thread for applicants to UBC's BScN program for September 2017, but I haven't found one. Please feel free to point me in the direction of an existing thread, or add to this one! I'm applying to UBC, U of T, and UWO for September, but UBC is definitely my first choice. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

:)

Hi @wonkknow,

Totally agree with some of the points you made. I don't think an online assessment replaces an in-person interview, as assessors won't be able to gauge the whole person properly. However, they have to try all options I suppose. I apologize if my previous comment was way too obvious......at least we're on the same playing field! Have a fabulous evening

@to-be-nurse that's exciting to know they updated the FAQs! Does anyone know what successful applicants looked like in the past? For my own piece of mind

@mdana93, I have spoken to a few nurses who are in the program now as well as former students. (Un)furtunately, depends how you look at it, there is no specific characteristic or way the successful applicants looked like! UBC has one of the most diverse groups of nurses in terms of their backgrounds. There are people who have not finished a bachelor yet and are 19 and then there are people who have worked in healthcare backgrounds as care aids and are 27, or there are people that are 47 with multiple degrees and have worked in career type jobs not related to healthcare! Some have no experience in the health field, others have never tried a different pathway. That is what I have found from those I have spoken to. I hope that can take some stress off. UBC really does look at the whole picture, no applicant is alike yet everyone shares the same goal, which I think makes it even better. Everyone will bring something to the table and push eachother forward! I hope we all make it in and can meet one another and push through the next 2 years!

Wow thank you!! That makes me feel so much better about being a young applicant! Good luck you guys!

@to-be-nurse. I'm an ignoramus when it comes to social media and socializing in general so I have to ask: how were you able to meet/connect/contact/speak with current and former UBC Nursing students? I would have loved to be able to speak with some of them. Currently I'm limited to speaking with a few Nurses and students that I meet in local (Toronto) hospitals - when they've a moment to talk with a curious volunteer.

I agree, the diversity of the student population is an asset, especially in learning from each other how to think through and around problems in different ways. Thanks for sharing the knowledge you've gathered! Here's to hoping we all can meet and achieve our dreams together in the near future!

@wonkknow, I had friends of a friend be kind enough to get me in touch with a few people! They have been amazing with providing info and great people I hope to meet soon! I too do not have social media so this was more the draw of luck!

The info they provided was more advice and how the system is now. The program we may be entering is currently under review and will most likely be different though. Also, they have no clue about CASPer we are all in the dark for this one. I am hoping the admissions blog gets updated soon or we hear something from the nursing faculty.

Thanks @to-be-nurse! That's really great to know. Does anyone else here have another degree? I've been chatting with some friends and some are really supportive and others think I'm undershooting. Anyone getting the same? I wish I could say I've always wanted to be a nurse but if I'm truthful it's something I've considered along with other professions such as physio and ot. If anyone is in the same boat as me I'd love to hear your thoughts! Nursing is a fun profession and I think ill be good at it, but I have some doubt... Maybe it's normal?

@tobenurse Thanks that definitely makes me feel better about my background.

I like a lot of us on here have no idea how I did on the Casper. thinking back on a few of the questions and I more than cringe at my answers. I wish that they would at least give us the results of our Casper so we had an idea of how we did.

I am really hoping I get in as I feel like this will be my last shot at nursing, having been rejected from other schools in the past.

How is everyone doing today?

Hi everyone, I finally decided to make an account and am looking forward to "waiting it out" with all of you for the next month. As some of yu may have seen, we just got an email update from Ruxandra. They will be getting our capser scores at the end of the month and we will know by the end of April!

Hey everyone! I have been observing the forum for quite some time now and decided it was time to make an account as well!

@ro.9 when I saw Ruxandra's email I literally freaked out thinking it was the admission results but it was just an update!

@to-be-nurse, you're in good company dude! What I remember from following last year's UBC BSN thread on this forum (I didn't participate), the few people who mentioned that they spoke with or had friends who went through the program tended to be ones who got in. I'm not implying anything by this; just noting a correlation that might ease some of the anxiety for you. Then again, as sciencey types like to constantly point out: correlation is not causation. LOL.

I wish that they would at least give us the results of our Casper so we had an idea of how we did.

I totally agree.

I am really hoping I get in as I feel like this will be my last shot at nursing, having been rejected from other schools in the past.

@Daisy2016, it's only your last shot if you chose to stop trying. With each attempt you'll improve. Just because you didn't get in to a school one year doesn't mean you wont get in the same school later. You can do things to improve your chances. I really don't feel great about my CASPer test and this is my second time applying to UBC. But I plan on keep banging the door until I get in!
