Hi Everyone!
I've been searching for a thread for applicants to UBC's BScN program for September 2017, but I haven't found one. Please feel free to point me in the direction of an existing thread, or add to this one! I'm applying to UBC, U of T, and UWO for September, but UBC is definitely my first choice. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!
:)
Thanks @to-be-nurse! That's really great to know. Does anyone else here have another degree? I've been chatting with some friends and some are really supportive and others think I'm undershooting. Anyone getting the same? I wish I could say I've always wanted to be a nurse but if I'm truthful it's something I've considered along with other professions such as physio and ot. If anyone is in the same boat as me I'd love to hear your thoughts! Nursing is a fun profession and I think ill be good at it, but I have some doubt... Maybe it's normal?
@mdana93, I've a BA and worked in design for a few years before deciding to change careers; I think there are a handful of non-sciencey degree peeps here on this thread as well.
Are any of your friends Nurses or work in Healthcare? The reason I ask is, I've noticed there's a HUGE disconnect between what the general public thinks Nurses do and what Nurses ACTUALLY do. You probably know this, but nursing as a profession is still struggling with the negative stereo types from the past 100 years. I personally wouldn't want someone who's NOT a healthcare professional to gauge my potential to become a Nurse, etc...
One of the hospitals I volunteer at is a rehabilitation hospital so I get to speak with a lot of OTs and PTs, etc... In Ontario atleast, to become a PT/ OT you've to go through a graduate program and from what I've heard, they're now notoriously difficult to get into. So much so that some of the other volunteers I've spoken with who wanted to go the PT/OT route were forced to apply and go to schools in the U.S. and the U.K..
Optionally, if a person doesn't want to go to gradschool but still wants to do PT/OT type of work, they can apply to post-secondary programs to become an PTA/OTA (physiotherapist/ occupational therapist assistant). I think they're 2 - 3 year programs for PTAs/OTAs. The difference in work is that PTs/OTs get to assess patients/clients while PTAs/OTAs don't have the background to do assessments. Ofcourse as everyone knows, salary is commensurate with education as well.
Sorry if you already know any of this, I just thought it might be helpful to share what I've learned.
@wonkknow, you are totally right about correlation! I just wanted to talk to as many people as possible, including a few nurse practitioner students to get a sense of what everyone thinks of the program as well as what it is like! Having friends as nurses really does help to realize what really occurs in the hospitals!
@Daisy2016, when did you apply before? It should be different with CASPer! I get the point where having a non nurse judge our nursing potential, but my guess is that the evaluators were told to look for specific qualities and cues in what we were saying! Maybe they will, like in previous years, either say you are accepted, waitlisted, or rejected but then tell you the percentile you fit in for GPA, supplemental, and CASPer scores!
@daisy2016 thanks for the info! I'm actually a kin graduate so I went through the application process for physio and ot and got the crap rejected out of me with an A average so that part I'm familiar with... I also work in mental health right now so I deal mainly with psych nurses (some of which love their jobs some which hate it). When I volunteered in renal again there was maybe one or two nurses who really loved their jobs but the rest kind of advised me to look elsewhere for a career since the hours (especially rotation) are really rough and it's a physically demanding job. Now I love being on my feet but when the majority of nurses say they're overworked and dislike their jobs it raises a bit of a red flag for me. Luckily there's always community nursing which will be nice stable hours and mainly paper work but you need at least 3 years in an acute setting to apply to a master's in nursing or if you're looking into med.
To conclude, I guess what my friends were getting at is that if there's other options (such as reapplying to pt/ot next year and hope for a more favourable pool) then that's better than the nursing profession. But then again they may have had bad experiences with the hospital they worked at and since I'm all about being on my feet I will love it.
Of the people who have friends in nursing, do they like their jobs? Or do they wish they pursued something else?
Hi @future.RN, I live in Maple Ridge, so not too far! If I get accepted, I may move closer towards Vancouver depending on clinical placements etc. I spoke to a current BSN student at the info session in September and she said that it isn't necessary to live on campus as you could be placed anywhere. However, I assume most of the classes will be held there so will need to be within easy travelling distance.
Hey everyone!
I've been creeping this thread for a while but thought it was time to join the conversation! It's so nice to have a group of people who are all feeling the same stress and anticipation that I am right now!
I'm in my last semester of my undergrad (BA in Geography, super unrelated to the healthcare field), but am so excited to hear back from UBC because becoming a nurse is my dream!
Thanks for all the support everyone, and good luck to you all!
it seems people have applied to other institutions requiring casper are starting to hear back.First and last time I am able to apply to UBC
do you know what schools? I guess it depends on how their supplementals were marked and such. Maybe we will all receive replies sooner than end of April?
Anyone else getting more jittery?

@wonkknow Thanks for the encouragement! needed that, it has been a tough week. I got down on myself there! Like I mentioned before I did try before and got rejected. Then I stopped trying for a long time. I am finally in the place where I am trying again and it is SCARY.
