Do you guys know anything about signing up with the this. They have nursing positions but ita like an enlistment. I will be graduating in a year and I am looking at options and this deals with prisons etc for the govt. I dont know how pay is, most likely salry but what if I want overtime etc.???? What do you guys think of this? Should I stick with a local hospital????

check out nursing specialties/military nursing/ there are several USPHS posts which depict the commissioning process and those whom currently serve.

I am not looking in to the military I am looking at the federal job nationally.

Your reply helps in no way

The post is about work experience with the PHS Commission as a BSN.

Anyone have experience or know information about PHS and what the nurses role and advantages of joining after school?

The individual was recommending that you look under the "Military Nursing..." specialty for further information regarding the USPHS. THAT is where you'll find further information. Thanks, JUSTCAUSE!

Yikes, bite his head off for trying to help...you know in the service we have professional respect for one another even when we are wrong. Attitudes don't fly.

Well, happy thanksgiving and thank you for the response to my reply.

I still recommend you look at the forum I showed you.

As you begin to read about the Public Health Service Corp you will quickly find out it is one of the 7 federal branches of the military our gov has established. Therefore it is rightfully categorized under this forum's military subset, and hence my recommendation.

Try to be open minded - most people here are here to help, myself included.

After you realize your reply was uncalled for and my initial post was proper you can click my posting's "Thank you" button as a common courtesy and apology and continue with your research.;)

It's ok I never realized that either but then again it's nothing to be upset about :) Try to be open minded - most people here are here to help, myself included.

Go ahead and click the 'thank you' button after you find the info in the forum ;)

WOW!!! Some pretty harsh comments, from I am guessing, a not so edumacated researcher. I have looked at the USPHS and from what I have seen, it is a tremendous position to be in! Great benefits, pay, but work in positions no others want to work d/t poor living conditions for your pts/etc.

I agree on the benefits and such - I guess the living conditions really depend on your personal preferances.. a lot of people do not want to live in an extremely rural area... which is where many positions (especially for those new to the service - and as a nurse are likely to be stationed). However I've read quite a few posts about people extremely happy to be in a remote position and doing positive things.. it really is nice if you want to retire federally but do not want the 'military' lifestyle.... as you more or less can stay in the same location and don't do the standard wartime deployment.

They website http://www.usphs.gov/default.aspx has a link to a new nurse specific site that is under development and says to stay tuned. Also you can find a link on the USPHS website which shows all the current positions available by title, region, and under which gov agency. Another nice thing is that when you apply you accept/reject offers by individual agencies/regions allowing you to control who you are working for and where to a given extent.

Is it me or are none of the PHS category/site links working...even from the USPHS website? Maybe it's my computer? Thanks folks
