TWU Spring 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi!

I haven't seen a thread made for the TWU Spring 2018 application process, so decided to start one! I'm the type to worry, and I know I'm not alone, so what better place to vent than here? For anyone wondering, the application date for Spring 2018 is August 15th, 2017!

My GPA comes out to a 3.720 with TWU preference. I haven't taken my TEAs yet, but plan to soon.

How about y'all?

@mandm1305 I would personally say that's enough to get in, but here is the nursing schools number: (940) 898-2401. But you are pretty competitive to me! I think we might have the same stats because we have the same GPA and no preferences. Still waiting on my teas score! Ahhhh. I'm also applying for the dallas campus :)

Hopefully we'll be classmates! When are you taking the TEAS?

I actually took it last Saturday, the 17th! But I took the handwritten version so it's taking a while. Yes, fingers crossed! Although I think o scored lower than an 87 :(

Also, I was stalking an older thread and that cohort got their letters during the last week of September. Hopefully we get ours earlier!

I'm sure you did great! Are you applying to multiple schools or just TWU?

Did anyone attend the Houston Nursing Information Session this past Friday? I JUST saw it on their website and would love to read about any information you may have been given!

No, but I'm an entering J1 in Houston, and I can answer a lot of questions!

Do not forget, applications are a 2 step process. First you apply to TWU through applyTexas, and once you are accepted and receive a student ID # you have to apply to the school of nursing through NursingCAS!

Thanks, pappa2v!

I just have the basic school questions:

Did they give any information on what the cohort usually looks like?

How many students admitted out of how many applicants?

Is there an Honors program or a research program in Houston?

Are clinicals located in Med Center or all around Houston Metro?

When do clinicals start?

Any information on internships or anything like that on the summer semester that we have off?

What do students usually do in those semesters?

Is there a course schedule for the different semesters?

Where do graduates usually end up working?

Is the application process solely based on merit or is it more of a lottery like UTHealth?

Are there any interviews or anything like that?

Do you remember how long after the application date closed that you were informed of admission?

Basically anything and everything you know about the school ;) .

I signed up for the info session in July and I spoke with an admissions counselor yesterday. He helped me out with a lot of stuff but there were a ton of questions I forgot to bring up. He did let me know that with the Houston campus I shouldn't worry too much about the TWU bump as most applicants to Houston don't have that (since the campus is in Denton) and that's mainly used for the Dallas selection process. He also gave me the same information as another poster on here gave that average TEAS was 87 and average pre-req GPA was 3.7 or 3.8. Somewhere around that. As for info on the school itself, I've tried navigating the website but most information I've found is pretty generic and I know they go into a lot more detail at the info sessions. Whatever you have would be great, pappa2v!

P.S. For anyone wondering, I've applied for Spring 2018 Houston. My pre-req is a 4.0 and TEAS was a 94. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that those are great stats but, of course, I don't want to get my hopes too high. I am, however, only applying to TWU. I love the idea of a 2 year program vs. the 15 month accelerated (I have a tiny family) and TWU's NCLEX pass rate is fantastic. I'm excited about the possibility of attending next year and getting to know all of you on here (and hopefully in class next January)!

Ok, I'm going to try and cover everything, let me know if I leave something out!!!

Thanks, pappa2v!

I just have the basic school questions:

Did they give any information on what the cohort usually looks like?

Not sure, it may have been mentioned at Orientation, but not really. Usually, the "points" at the bottom range in the accepted student range in Houston, is 40-43 pts. There are a couple in my cohort with 38 pts. While most in Houston do not have the TWU bump, many have a previous Bachelor's. Literally, though my cohort is very diverse. All backgrounds, all levels... from a PhD to 19 year-old CC transfer! Your scores are excellent, and I'm not sure your points (check in the TWU GPA worksheet) but I would assume you are safe based on your grades and TEAS.

How many students admitted out of how many applicants?

Not sure how many applicants there were, but approximately 120 were accepted, I believe last we counted our cohort is ~110 +/-.

Is there an Honors program or a research program in Houston?

There is not an Honors Program persay that I know of, but there are amazing research and experiential learning opportunities. Everyone gets research experience, and I am looking at doing a 2-credit hour elective next summer, by attending a 2-week trip for experiential learning in Peru! There are also many opportunities available in Houston!

Are clinicals located in Med Center or all around Houston Metro?

Clinicals are offered in the Med Center and in other strong hospitals in the Metro area. With so many amazing schools in the area it's hard to place every student in the TMC. However, I have heard excellent feedback from the outside placements: One girl had a preceptor who was a flight nurse! So she got to work all her shifts as a flight nurse!

Also, if you are placed outside the TMC, it's always a group of students going, so most people arrange a car pool because all the shifts are the same.

When do clinicals start?

J1 semester, about 6 weeks in.

Any information on internships or anything like that on the summer semester that we have off?

See above! Internships, externships, etc...

What do students usually do in those semesters?

Again see above...

Is there a course schedule for the different semesters?

Not really, because they will not know your lab/clinical schedule. On the website there is a list of which courses you take and when since they have to be in a specific order. Classes are currently held Monday/Tuesday, and the other days are reserved for lab/clinical. However, the amount of days you have lab/clinical depends on the semester.

Where do graduates usually end up working?

Depends on the students, people go to different places, I've heard of great offers from where they were placed during clinicals. I also know from people who work in HR in the TMC that TWU nurses are very highly regarded...

Is the application process solely based on merit or is it more of a lottery like UTHealth?

As far as we have been told, it's strictly the ranking process.

Are there any interviews or anything like that?

No.

Do you remember how long after the application date closed that you were informed of admission?

The application closed on Feb 1st. We were notified March 22nd (I believe).

Do not stress now. (I know easier said than done). Take it one step at a time, and breathe! Once you get the acceptance letter there will be so much to do, and specific timing for when to do everything. Good Luck!

Oh and in case you were wondering:

I had a 3.8 something, a 91.7 TEAS, and ~51 pts (w/ previous Bachelor's bump)

Do not forget, applications are a 2 step process. First you apply to TWU through applyTexas, and once you are accepted and receive a student ID # you have to apply to the school of nursing through NursingCAS!

Thank you SO much for saying this! Do you have to wait for all of your transcripts to come in to apply to the nursing program? Or just once you're accepted? Also, do you have to submit all your transcripts through nursing CAS?

Sooooo.... I got an 84 on my TEAS :/ English was my lowest at 75%. I am pretty bummed. Honestly wanted at least an 85. Thinking of retaking it.. any advice? Should I reschedule?

Applying to Dallas.

GPA: 4.0

TEAS: 84

No preference or bumps

So I just spoke to a nursing advisor and she said that I have 46 points. For Dallas, the average applicant points for the most recent semesters (spring and fall 2017) was 48 points. For Houston, it was 38 and 40 points.

I can either retake the TEAS and try to get my English score up... or just apply to Houston. Torn. My family lives in Dallas and I planned on living at home.

Thank you SO much for saying this! Do you have to wait for all of your transcripts to come in to apply to the nursing program? Or just once you're accepted? Also, do you have to submit all your transcripts through nursing CAS?

You will not be admitted/accepted until all your transcripts are on file. No, you will not resubmit transcripts to NursingCAS, once the school has them they have them.
