Is anyone out there applying to TWU for the Spring of 2010? Just thought that I would start a group for all of us hopefuls so we could share information and have a way to communicate with each other.
Have you taken your HESI A2 yet? Have you taken all of your pre-reqs? If not, what do you have left to take?
I have taken all of my pre-reqs, and I just took my HESI yesterday. I didn't think it was bad at all, but I prepared for it for about 3 weeks.
If you haven't noticed, TWU has made some slight changes that I think some people will not be happy with. They are taking into consideration the first grade made at pre-req attempts for several of the classes like A&P, micro, and another class. What do you think of this? I wonder how it will change the applicants chances of getting in?
Good luck and I look forward to meeting you!
Yes, I've heard that if you're a straight A student, kiss it goodbye in Nursing School 'cause you'll do everything you possibly can just to eek out a B. The 78 rule I've heard of (and I'm not sure that it was at TWU or not) is that you are not considered passing if you have less than an average of 78 in a class. I don't know if it's the case at TWU or not, I heard it somewhere and don't know if it applies at TWU.
I think TWU 72 is passing.
Hey, for all you guys who are planning to go on after the BSN to pursue an APN degree - have you seen or heard that in 2015 the AACN is requiring that APN programs switch from MSN to DNP? Were you guys aware of this? Does anyone have more info about this issue or know how much longer it will take to get a DNP over the MSN? I am a little put off by this. I don't think I will be able to complete an MSN program before 2015. Thoughts?
OK, I don't remember the thread name, but research/search for other threads that cover this because I've heard that it is only a "suggestion" at this point. Some schools are moving that direction, but as far as it being required by the Board of Nursing and other institutions, it is by far not a done deal. I don't know that TWU is requiring it or even planning on it, so don't upset yet. It will take time for this to become formalized and at that point you would probably be "grandfathered in".
Yeah, I read through some other threads, and it does look like it is still only being considered. However, I was considering a direct-entry master's program at the Univ. of Wa. before I decided to just go for my BSN, and when I sent them an inquiry, they let me know they were phasing out all of their master's programs. I believe they have already moved solely to the DNP for advanced practice programs. UW is one of the top, if not the top, nursing schools in the nation. I would think if they have already moved to the DNP, then it is most likely going to happen sooner or later. And for those of us just now getting into the field, I would imagine it would be in our best interest to go ahead and get the DNP, if that is the direction everything is headed. It would be one thing to get grandfathered in with an MSN and 10 years experience, but to get the MSN and just barely come in under the deadline and not have the experience, and be competing for jobs with DNP prepared NP's, I would think you would be at a disadvantage. Interesting to see what happens.
Oh, I totally agree with you that it would be difficult to compete with those who are getting the DNP, but given that you could actually start practicing earlier and be "safe" from being required to have the DNP (as opposed to wanting to have it) I would opt to go ahead and get the MSN (if offered at the institution you want to go to) and start practicing and then be able to get the DNP at at a time of my choosing, not theirs. Also, I don't know how many of the current MSN practicing nurses would want to move up to the DNP level, they will be grandfathered in, but we would only be competing with those who are currently in the process of getting their DNP and I recently read somewhere that the first "batch" of DNP just graduated and I think it was like a total of 32 nationwide. Of course that number will grow, but it'll take a while. It's still very new.

btw, the test does have multiple choice on it, so don't forget the study guide questions that are matching.
