TWU Spring 2010 Dallas regular program

U.S.A. Texas

Moving this thread from the TWU 2010 spring hopefuls for those of us who were accepted. This one is specifically for people planning to attend the regular program in Dallas starting in January 2010. The purpose of this thread is to lend mutual support and encouragement to each other as we embark on this journey together. Please feel free to ask questions, and share your concerns. Everyone is welcome!

I finally made it. Sorry it took me so long. Been running around like a crazy person the last two days. Anyway, congrats to all of us who have made it into the program and over to the new thread. This is going to fun.

Did any of you list Frisco/Allen/Plano as your first choice for clinicals? I doubt I get any of them and probably should have put the central Dallas one as my first choice as some have, but one more day that I don't have to drive downtown from Frisco is money in my pocket and more time to study. :)

On the topic of scrubs, does anyone know if they allow us to wear a "jacket" and if so what color is that? I looked at a scrubs place today out in Irving and they had burgundy and white and I get really cold in hospitals and just know that I'm going to need to have a jacket or :) long underwear on!!!!

Anyway, happy to be here (still)!!!

I'm confused about clinical sites. I am in north Lewisville, so I guess on the bright side, everything is about the same distance away. The only one I can safely rule out completely is south Dallas. My confusion stems from where to put Denton on my list. It is the closest to me, and would be the easiest drive since it would be against traffic, but it is the only option that is in the complete opposite direction of school. It would be fine if I knew I was ONLY going to have clinical on a given day, but if there are days where there is class AND clinical, then Denton would be awful. Anyone else even considering putting Denton on your list?

Denton is on my list, but I think I listed it 4th. It's an easy drive for me too, but alot of miles. My understanding (and anyone correct me if I'm wrong) is that when you have clinicals it's at the hospital for the whole day. Like when you look on the classes to register, some of them say that the class is on Tuesday, but the clinical is on Thursday, then you spend Thursday only doing the clinical at the hospital, not class at all.

One girl (who was in El Centro's program) told me that on clinical day, you go to the hospital the night before (sometime after 7:00 so that you're patient doesn't sign out) and you choose a patient you want to "cover" the next day. You review their chart, go home write up your care plan and then go back to the hospital on your clinical day and participate with the nurse that has that patient. Now I believe that this girl was going into her 3rd semester, so this may be a bit advanced for us first semester rookies, but that's the gist of what I understand clinicals to be. Anyone else, please feel free to jump in and add to anything (or dispute if you know TWU's way of doing things).

BTW, here's a post that someone put up about clinicals. Seems there's different ways that it's done, so if anyone knows how TWU does it, please speak up.

Butterfly I think you're right and TwinJeep97's blog sounds very similiar to what my friend was saying. She is finishing her first semester at TWU. Sometimes she did have to go the night before and do pre work write up on her patient so she had to go from school to the hospital. She talked about writing down the meds, researching, doing a full write up. I know she did cathers last week already! She said her next patient group are spinal cord injuries. So there are some sort of rotations.

Hey guys, I have yet to receive my packet, and waiting ever so patiriently for it...

I need to schedule my 2nd dose of hep., but I really don't want to. It always ends up bruising really bad. L Anywho, about financial aid, if I received a subsidized loan, how does it work? Does the school send you a check or does it automatically get applied to the tuition? Any advice would be great! Thanks guys. You all are so helpful and so great.

Butterfly Journey,

Here is what my friend said to the question about shirts/jackets:

"Hey! Yes you can wear white shirts (either long or short). You also need a sports bra for Assessment. I know sounds weird but we practice on each other. You can get a navy or white scrub jacket but usually a long sleeve shirt will be all you might need. The keep it pretty hot in the school & in the hospitals, you are usually so busy that you don't want a jacket! Hope this helps!

I went and got my shoes and scrubs at JcPenney OUtlet they have a big sale! I am getting so excited!

Thank you!!

I think our thread is about to get lost, so I'm bumping it up.

Does anybody know how many clinicals we have our first semester?!

Meg, that is a really good question. I would like to know that too! I think we are going to have a better understanding at orientation. I am looking forward to getting all my questions answered on Dec. 11.:D
