Hello, my name's Tien and I'm going to apply for TWU Houston Fall 14'. I noticed there's a topic for Dallas but none for Houston so I'm starting this one, hoping it will be a place for us hopeful applicants to come and share information.
BTW, my stats are: GPA 3.892, TEAS V 85.3%, 2/4 first attempt, and previous BA in Business. I'm scared b/c of my "1st attempt" since I see most that got in have 3 or 4/4 ...
So, welcome and good luck to us all!!! :):):)
Hey everyone, I just happened to sit down and look for this topic. First off for those of you that received emails/letters - Congratulations!
I am currently a senior nursing student at TWU Houston (graduating in December) and can answer some of the questions that you have about school/campus/Houston. Things change semester to semester, but I will give you whatever information I have or can find for you.
Please feel free to message me directly or ask publicly if it isn't personal and I will do my best to answer.
Hi root.user,
How many students are there in nursing classes? I prefer studying in small classroom environment with professors paying more attention to students. Will TWU be a good choice?
What do you like/ don't like about TWU?
Thank you for spending your time to answer our questions :)

Every admitted class is about 100 people, usually a few don't show up so I would guess the starting class is around 95 or so. All of your lectures will be as a single group (~100 students) then your get labs are about 10 students.
As far as professor's attention - I can say that I felt the professors really want students to succeed. Regardless of what you hear, there are no true "weeding" courses, but some are just more difficult than others. From what I have heard rumored (but not experienced) some of the other nursing schools (ahem, UT) treat their students a bit more like a number than a name. I wouldn't say that about TWU-Hou.
What do I like - that is hard to answer. Every person's experience is unique, I am involved with the Nursing Student Association and some other things on campus, so I just enjoy being involved and busy. There are outlets for various things, you find your niche.
What do I not like - you can ask me that question after graduation.
Honestly - I don't see a preference anywhere. I have worked with nurses from TWU, UT, Lamar, out of state and out of country. Some hospitals and floors seem to have more nurses from a particular school, but I don't think that is predictive of getting hired.
Most graduate nurse employers are looking at GPA (3.0-3.2+) and involvement. A former nursing director told me her favorite question for new grads was, "You have a great GPA, now... what else did you do?"
Thanks for your quick response! Do you think it is possible to maintain a high GPA at TWU? Does the school offer resources such as tutoring and are the prof available for students? I understand nursing school is a whole other game than pre-reqs.
As far as living, what part of the area do you live? Is parking really $80/mo?

A high GPA? I would say so. It isn't easy, but I have never posted a "C" on my transcript (personal goal). There are people that make deans list (3.5+) each semester, and occasional 4.0s.
There is peer tutoring for 3 of the 4 J1 classes. Scheduling can be hit/miss but we try to tutor on a schedule that works as as many as possible, but doesn't always work.
As far as professors go, I have been mostly successful, but some other students would disagree. So it may just depend on the professor.
