TWU Fall 2010

Published

Is anyone out there applying to TWU for the Fall of 2010? I got this idea from a previous thread and thought I should get one started for this semester, so that we can help each other and communicate with each other?

I have taken the Hesi-A2 and got a 74.8 on it so they didn't even look at my application. I live on campus so any help or information I can give just let me know. I'm excited and feel good about this deadline.

Good luck and I look forward to meeting you!

Hey guys! Silly question...do we need to take another HIPPA online course/test for Spring 2011 or does the one we took Fall 2010 count? The directions on our prof's requirements form reads "only needs to be done once/year" but I wasn't sure if that meant once/calendar year or once/academic year?

Good question!! CCLL said the videos where not available due to some techical issue...I wonder if they are up now. Edwards was at the school yesterday...she might be there today.

I'm about 90% sure it's for one calendar year (read: September '10 - September '11).

I printed my results, but it doesn't say my name on it...I wonder if there's a better way. (same with the immunizations in portal...)

How did you go about printing your HIPPA results? I can't recall how I printed them out last semester. I printed my immunizations from portal and it shows my first name towards the top of the page. Let me know if you want me to give you a step-by-step of how I printed immunizations with my name on it.

Hey guys! Man I haven't posted on here in a MINUTE! Well, I'm all set for next Tuesday. I've been bombarded with info from the 2 orientations and advisement, and one might think that I shouldn't have ANY more questions. Well that person would be WRONG! haha. Let's get down to it:

Classes start next Tues. duh, My clinical day is Sat. When do I have to wear my scrubs?!?! I need to know if I shud rush order the or not b/c I don't have them yet. THanks

Scrubs are needed for concepts and assessment labs, no lectures. I honestly can't remember if we wore them the first week... I remember for the first two weeks of assessment lab, the J2s were using all the labs, so we were in a computer classroom and didn't need scrubs. I just don't remember about concepts. I think that for labs, you can get away with a lab coat over your clothes, so long as you have on closed toed shoes and look decent.

ThanKs TX for the scrub info.

Hey guys...I have been accepted to TWU Fall 2011 and just wanted to pop in here and see if you guys had any information that you may want to share.

I'm curious how your 1st year is going. Especially as far as schedules. Are your semesters broken into 8wks or just the full semester? How far into it did you start your clinicals? Any online classes or should I expect to be on campus 5 days a week for the most part?

Thanks in advance for any peak into what is ahead for many of us!!!

The first semester there aren't any online classes. You should expect to drive to the med center at least three or four days a week. Some people get placed in clinicals near where they live, or have clinical/lab on Tuesday, so that knocks one day of driving out. Mondays are assessment and concepts lectures, and Tuesday is pharmacology and pathophysiology. If you can take patho over the summer, do it! You will not regret it, but you may regret not doing it.

I can't remember exactly how many clinicals we had last semester...is that bad? I think there were six or eight though. For the first few weeks, you'll meet in the lab on clinical days to learn skills. First semester clinical is mostly bed baths, bed making, giving meds, and vitals...pretty basic stuff, but it's mostly to get you used to going to the hospital and talking to patients. You learn other skills in lab, but you may not get the chance to do them in clinical, depending on where you do clinicals and who your instructor is. For me, I never had the opportunity to do any because no patients needed them on my unit. You'll have to make a care plan for your patient, and the expectations vary from instructor to instructor....which can sometimes seem very unfair, but such is life...and the unfairness never goes away.

Then there's assessment lab. This is where you learn to take vitals and assess every body system. You'll have to change clothes into a tanktop/sports bra and shorts for many labs, so be prepared for that. Always have a change of clothes, your stethoscope, and your assessment kit (which you'll get at orientation) when you go to lab.

On the dress code stuff. You don't have to buy scrubs from TWU, but you'll have to buy patches and name tags for your scrubs. I don't like the school scrubs, so I bought Grey's Anatomy scrubs...they are awesome. They just have to be maroon/wine color. If you have clinicals at St. Luke's, your instructor may require you to have a white top because their PCAs wear maroon. For the shoes, so far, no one has gotten in trouble for wearing the "wrong" shoes that I know of. I bought the Dansko clogs, and didn't like them...though most people love them. For lab days, you must have closed toed shoes, so any running/walking shoes would do. For clinicals, I would recommend an all leather shoe just in case you get something dripped on you...hasn't happened to me, but it's always a possibility. If you find something in all white or all black...great, but don't stress too much. I have all black, all leather Asics that are awesome...especially since one of my clinicals this semester is 12 hours long...my feet don't hurt at the end of the day. Don't stress about lab coats. I've yet to use mine.

Okay, I'm rambling. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Tx- did'nt know you were still on here.

First semester not so bad, if you have the option to take pharm in the Summer, plaese do...trust me, it will be worth it.

Second semester- plan not to have a life, your new life consits of Nursing School...try to make a little time for yourself, even if it is just reading a book outside.

Oh yeah, plan to have atleast 1 or more breakdowns...haha.

Thank you SOOO MUUUCHHH!!!! I was really stressing but I know it comes with the territory...reading your comments puts me a lil at ease to know that you atleast have time to be helpful to those that will follow!!! I am going to try to take Patho in the summer...although I still do not find it posted on the schedule. I am actually taking pharmacology now so hopefully that will help me when I take the course at TWU.

Breakdowns...got it...:lol2: My husband has set up a special place for me to have those already...LMAO...with 3 kiddos i know it's impossible for this to be a smooth transition...but hey who doesn't like a challenge...:D
