Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey everyone!

I'm a nurse wannabe, attending school next fall.

I'm curious what you "real, live" nurses think of such programs on tv as ER, Real Life Trauma, Maternity Ward, etc.

Are these show a help or hinderance to the profession?

Are they realistic?

Do you think they show a glamorized version of your work?

I'm very curious as to what you - the experts - think about this topic.

Oh man what a riot!

I can't get passed the x-ray hung upside down & backwards !!!!!

The ER doc shouting out every abbreviation known to man kind

I want a CBC, H&H, CHEM PANEL, Liver Panel, Enzymes, bun, Crt, o2 sat, tsh, pt, ptt, HIV ( no consent ) screening, ofcourse we will repeat some of the panels.... sodium, potassium,,,, etc etc etc,,, blah, blah blah blah. oh yeah, make it an asap STAT!

portable CXR -- The guy is coding on the table lets stop it and wheel him down to x-ray and stand him up for the chest film. daah

TYPE & CROSS for 2 units of packed red cells ( what other color do they come in ??? Purple, Green, Orange, Blue????

and make it STAT.... everything is STAT in the ER !

they all sound like Charlie Brown's teacher - Whaa Whaa Whaa Whaa Whaa Whaa, Whaa Whaa.

And all the ER docs are handsome, all the nurses are skinny with clear skin and shinny hair. They even have enough energy to go work out after working a double shift. Everyone runs around getting everything done.... with out washing their hands. Equipment is so dense you can't get the guerneys in. Feeding pumps, and all the other equipment you never see in the ER.

I can't watch it without picking it apart.

I like watching the animal rescue show. I am not sure of the title but it is like "animal ER". Since it is out of my area I can't pick it apart.

We have a show over here called "All Saints " and you have never seen the likes of what goes on in this public hospital ward !!!!!

anything from Emergency surugery and delivering babies to rapid detox!!

Not to mention the nurses that are always having a break, they just walk past and holler I'm going now.

They get involved in their patients lives and do alot of hand holding...I'm sorry but on my busy surgical ward after a morning shift with 8 patients and the EN'S pills......I hardly know the names of the patients!!!!! let alone their life stories.

If I hear one more little old lady tell me that the nurses on All Saints do it this way.......I'm booking myself into the nut farm !

They really do believe hospitals are the way they are portrayed on the TV.

the closet thing on tv, imho, is the hopkins 24/7 series on nurses. it airs from time to time on the discovery health channel. it's not the same as the series which aired on abc tv re. hopkins docs ( i think it's stuff that was on the cutting room floor). that was very well done in many respects but, what a surprise for prime time, left the nurses out. i guess we are not good enough to sell cereal or beer to the masses on commercial tv, but we can pedal darren's dance grooves on those cable channels. it is a shame too, because the shows on the nurses were very good. and guess what? there's a lot more nurses at "the john" than there is docs!

I'm betting they're never short-staffed when the Baby Story people come a-filming ;).

So true!

Well, I really only watch "ER." I'm always amazed at how much is done in the ER that is usually done on other floors, especially OB stuff. "Well, we've been paging the OB attending for an hour with no answer, so I guess we'll do a stat section here!" And they're always recovering post partums and performing the duties of the NICU in the ER.

 Um, yeah.... sure.

I don't care though, I still love it. AND IT'S ON TONIGHT!

And please don't ever go by soap opera's. If we lived in Genoa City, we would pat our patients on the head, look at monitors, lovingly look at doctors (there's only 2 in Genoa City), never turn patients, and we would immediately run and get coffee for Victor Neuman when he walks in. That's it.

Oh yeah, hold a metal chart and tell the visitors, "the doctor will have to discuss that with you", and if they get emotional, we run and get a cold compress. Don't forget to look worried when the big sweeping music plays in the background. :D

Oooh, Vegas, you're a Y & R fan, too? Aren't they incredible on the soaps? As the World Turns is good for many giggles when they have folks in their hospital...Drs. Bob, John, & Susan seem to specialize in almost everything except OB & Psych.

What would we do without all of these rotten examples of hospital life? Probably find something else to gripe about.

Have any of you ever seen Scrubs on NBC? While I think it is funny at times, it is the worst show on television for portraying a hospital realistically. On one episode, they had a code and one intern and one attending were the only two people in the room with this patient. One doc was using the defibrillator and one doc was doing compressions. That was it....no airway, no breathing, no drugs.....nothing else!!!

By the way, my husband hates to watch any type of medical show with me because I am always screaming at the TV..."they don't do it like that!!!"....lol

I really loved it when Nicki Neuman was in a car accident. They had this big 'ol huffing vent in the room going and she had on a nasal cannula. She got real faint, the vent stopped huffing, she went flatline, and the nurse ran from the room screaming for the doctor. I had to write a letter.

As much as I liked the movie "John Q", I lost it when the little boy talked to his father with the ET tube in. I think I yelled, "OH FER CRYING OUT LOUD!!!" in the theater. Oops.

Me too, I end up crying through most of it, but I love that show.

:roll :roll :roll

RN in OZ I used to work at Concorde Hosp! (Where "All Saints" is filmed) It cracks me up!!! You can even see my old room in the nurses quarters in the opening shots! But it's soooo realistic...aren't you going out with an Ambo?? Don't you go out in the rigs just for a jaunt??? Man you're missing out LOL!!!!

OMGoodness! I was watching that new "Haunted" show and was wigging out because they are fully coding the guy and using a bag mask!!!! Hello?? Where is anesthesia to tube this guy???? Can't say his lines with an ETT I guess.

I watched Presidio Med too. Could it get any more unrealistic?
