Do you have a visa status that permits you to legally work in the USA?
Yes po.. Im a legal permanent resident and allowed to work. What steps do i need to take? Based from what ive read foreign graduates need to take some units?

You apply to CABRN for licensing by examination as an IEN. As a PR you should have a SSN which is currently mandated for applying. Once they assess your credentials you will be notified if approved or require further study. Be prepared to provide school calendar, passport, case logs, ToR, transcripts and a potential variety of documents required by CABRN. There is heavy scrutiny as many before you submitted falsified transcripts and documentation. The main trigger to require further study is if your theory, clinical and cases are not concurrent. Example had maternal child Sep-Dec 2013 all classes, clinical, delivery & cord care cases must have been completed before the last school day in December. Once cord care done in January and it's considered out of concurrency and you would be required to repeat maternal child theory/clinical.

Oh and you don't just take the NCLEX. You apply for a nursing license by examination. If you meet the BRN requirements you are deemed eligible to register for and take the NCLEX-RN. Passing the NCLEX is but one step in the licensing process

call me crazy but hasn't the CABRN made it nearly impossible for international students to get their licensing? I mean my friend got her MSN in australia and had to go to another state because they wouldn't honor her schooling. I know of a monitor tech at my old hospital that has been waiting 5 years to hear back from a school in la to allow him to finish the last of his schooling. he's has to get approval from the CABRN before he can even go to school. if it were me, id go back to school here cause it beats having to wait so long.
The best answer is always to train in the country where you wish to live and work. CABRN has had the concurrency rule for 2 decades. Australian nurses have sufficient clinical & theory in adult, geriatric, pediatric & mental health. However they often lack obstetric nursing as obstetric/maternity is generally under the scope of midwives in AUS. In the US & Canada nurses are generalist trained in adult, geriatric, pediatrics , maternity/obstetrics, and mental health.
this is why i didn't get my msn in australia! no thanks! Stayed here and had no problem sitting for the test.
So do i still need to study here in california for me to be licensed? thanks for your patience
Maybe. Were all your cases concurrent with clinical and theory?

The best AND only answer to your concerns is to simply submit all your paperwork to the CA BRN, be prepared to be asked for further documentation of your cases and clinicals and take the gamble on the non-refundable application fees.
Since we can discuss this until the moon turns into green cheese but the final decision will come from the letterhead of the CA BRN evaluators.
There have been a few of actually passed the requirements, but I would put that number on my two hands.

Even if your cases were concurrent, they wont let you take the nclex. You still need to retake some subjects.
