Trying to pursue a BSN

Published

I am at a total loss at this moment. I'm a sophomore in college in Chicago and was trying to transfer into UIC's BSN program by Fall of 2011. Unfortunately, even if everything goes according to plan, I won't have completed all of my pre-requisites needed by the deadline. I would have to wait until 2012 to re-apply since they only accept students in fall. I don't want to waste a whole year not doing anything since i just needed one semester to finish my pre-reqs. I don't know if i should graduate with a Bachelors in Biology since the pre-reqs cover most of the classes needed to get a bachelors degree in biology. I was also wondering if i do seek a second bachelors in Nursing if the classes i took for the biology degree (since they are all of the pre-reqs needed for nursing) would count as college credit (UIC does accept the trasfer credits for my college) towards the nursing degree, or if i would have to start all over again with no credits whatsoever.

I don't know if this makes any sense at all but i'm hoping some one can perhaps offer some advice at least. I know i should probably contact UIC-chicago to ask these questions but i need to make sure i have a clear list of questions first.

How many prereq's do you have and when is the deadline? Do you have to have them all done before you apply? I am getting an associates in nursing and I only had to have 12 hours and my math course done before applying (I did have all but my English done, however, and I completed that between 1st and 2nd year of nursing classes as an online Summer course). Are you including Summer classes in the semesters you have left before the deadline? Have you completed any prereq's already? Are you working and going to school? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to clarify what you are asking.

Well currently since i just decided i wanted to become a nurse i have none of my science pre-reqs. I wont be done with them by fall of 2010 which was the deadline to start the nursing in fall of 2011. I only needed to have 3 of the 5 science courses but i won't even have that done. I did consider taking some summer courses but i still wont meet the deadline. I am also working and planning to go full time. I think i will just graduate with a degree in Biology and see if i could use the same credits toward a bachelors in Nursing. I don't know if thats even possible but i'm hoping it is.

I guess it's hard for me to understand this since you are taking full time hours and you have 3 semesters before the deadline, but I also don't know what other courses you are going to take or how many hours you have to finished by the deadline in order to apply. I'm sure if you go right back for your BSN after you finish your Biology degree, the courses that will count towards nursing will still be good. In your case, any course like Anatomy and Physiology 1&2, Microbiology, English Comp 1&2, and whatever college level math class you take should transfer to nursing. If you have a college adviser talk this over with them, they might have a plan! And yes, you should contact UIC about this too, lol! :pGood luck with what you decide!

It sounds so far away...but trust me, I remember when I started I felt the same way.... And now, two years later, here I am! Just got accepted and I start in three weeks! Two years will go by faster than you think....

Personally, here's what I would do.... I think it would be smart to get your Biology Bachelor's. Then, you could do a 2nd degree BSN program and finish your nursing in one year. I just graduated Friday from a 2nd Degree BSN program from Texas Tech. It was 12 months. I go for an interview tomorrow at our local hospital. Good luck!:D
