Does anyone have any scoop on why Truman College suddenly, little more than a week before the application deadline, extended it for another month? On their Website there is an announcement that the deadline has been extended until March 1. However, they provide no explanation as to why (or how it will affect the decision process and timeline). I highly doubt they don't have enough applicants unless they are rethinking their entrance guidelines, which wouldn't surprise me, but would also be somewhat shady this late in the game. Just wondering if anyone knows of anything going on, or if it's just a ploy to get a bigger pool of applicants.

And we have no voice, we really don't. Do you see them notifying us that we won't be receiving an answer "on or before April 1st?
zbb13, the one thing I've learned in my years of working in social service and case management, is that we all have a voice, and there is always a way to make something happen. Even if it doesn't happen on your clock (someone else may benefit), there is almost always a way. Now if you hit a dead end, at least your voice was heard. You continue to pursue or move on, the choice is yours.
CCC is in place because of our tax dollars. Where do you think the 100 reserved seats came from? Chancellor Hyman didn't just place them there out of the kindness of her heart. So it may not be the smooth easy voice we would like, but yes we do have a voice if it's use is warranted.
I sometimes wish I could leave, too. What school have you applied to, Smokey?
I've applied to Chicago State University, St. Xavier, Indiana University-Northwest, Ambria/Americare, St. Francis University-Crown Point, Morton College..if I finally get my lazy orifice over there tomorrow by 5pm to drop of the application.. .. Hmmm...I think that's it..I thought there was one more though..Oh..Wright's LPN program, and I'll probably apply to Ivy Tech for Spring 2012 just in case.. out of all of those.. I only expect to get into like 2..lol I still have to take the TEAS for St. Xavier, Ambria and Morton College I think.. I know I can get into Ambria as long as I get over 50% on the TEAS..so if I have to go that route..I'm going to! Of course cheaper would be better..but I'm gonna take whatever I get.. I just better get into just 1 school..that's all I care about!
Now, that's where my head is focused! I have the same idea in mind. I held off on the idea of settling into my own home, here. Just incase I decide with family to ship it out of Chicago! To move on as an RN would be that much more sweet!April baby.
My boyfriend turns 36 tomorrow(:heartbeat). Happy (early) B-day, Smokey! Enjoy!
Aww..Thank you so much hon!! Greatly appreciated!! Happy Birthday to your boyfriend!
Yah...I used to never think that I'd ever leave Chicago.. but I'm so done! If I lived in the burbs it might be different..I grew up in the South burbs..but I've pretty much lived in the city since I was I guess 17 when I went to Loyola.. I've been in my condo for 9 years now..and it's too damn expensiver here.. and Cook County SUCKS! PERIOD! The government here is so crooked! The money we pay in taxes here is UNREAL and then you have to pay these damn taxes and what...80% of the public schools suck...so then you have to pay for private schools anyway...and that's as much as college is..and that's just grade school! I'll never have what I think I should have staying here! That's why I'll even take getting into an LPN program..that's a year or less..and then I can bridge! Whatever it takes! My plan is to be outta here summer of 2013!
Why are people saying that taking Micro and Anatomy is a waste? If you get into the program you are going to have to take them anyway. At least they are already out of the way. That is most likely the case for all the nursing programs. I also think it is more fair to accept applicants using their pre-req grades. It is not fair for someone to get into the program before someone else simply because they have taken more classes. This will ensure that only people with straight A's will get in. As far as sending acceptance e-mails on May 2nd, that is ridiculous, Truman needs to get it together.
I don't think they are saying taking Micro and Anatomy was a waste like you are thinking.. if I had said it..I would mean that here they took all this extra time out to finish up these prereqs that were REQUIRED before to even apply to the program..and now they change it to not needing those to apply?!!!! Sure, you have to take them anyway..but some people could have applied to the program a year or more ago.. so what if you have to take them after your in the program.. at least your iIN the program.. kwim?? They don't let people in the program just because they took more classes then someone else..it's because they took more of the prereqs and core classes needed for the program...some, they say you can take in the program.. like maybe Sociology or something like that.. but if you already took it..then that puts you ahead of someone else.. it's not just because they just took more classes of whatever..if that's what you meant.. but that's how a lot of the application processes are.. getting more points for the more required classes you took... they have to even out the playing field somehow.. but for them to change things after the fact..and late in the game...that's just not fair!
To add to the above---it isn't a waste, sure you will have to take them. But some of us have now finished, or will be finishing our last class, and there is NOTHING else to take while we are waiting. We've waited an extra year because you can only take 226 and 227 in sequence...etc....and we could have been in the program already.
Also, if one of us had a B in a prerequisite, and we knew this was the ONLY consideration for getting in, we possibly would have repeated that course in order to have a better average. For instance, if you had an A in Chem, a B in Bio and an A in Math, you could have a 4.0 by redoing the Bio.
In addition, the ranking score was based on the number of classes you took, but this number was multiplied by your grade, so if you had low grades, it would make you less competitive. They went on and on at orientation that the more classes you take, statistically, the better your chances of being successful in the nursing program. Do you know how many people drop out of the program?--and for 3 main reasons.....1) it was academically too much for them 2) they didn't really know what nursing involved and 3) they had too many other obligations and just couldn't do the work.
So, all of this is totally unfair to those of us, and there are quite a number, who have been plugging away at all of the classes, not realizing that ultimately, none of it would mean anything in the scheme of things. Bio 226 and 227 are much more difficult than Bio 120. We could have an A in each prereq. and Cs in each of these and still get into the program, according to the new rules.
Last, but NOT least, this is supposed to be a 2 year program, ha ha. The way Truman had it set up, it was almost impossible to finish all the prerequisites and co-requisites in one year, because you had to follow the sequence --i.e. you need Bio and Chem to take 226, and 226 to take 227 (unless you had taken these courses and had to redo them as they were more than 5 years old). You couldn't put your spring class in your application because the deadline was before you would get your final grade. So, yeah, a bunch of us, who are now in competition with 4 times as many people, now have a statistically less chance of getting into the program if we didn't have an A on each of the 3 prerequisites. A friend of mine has a 4.0 average--has finished every class--but had a B from way back when in Math, and her chances went from 100% of getting in to a 3.6 GPA and not a guaranteed entrance.
I don't think the compass exam will count for much, but who knows.

Thank you, Smokey. Should be a nice weekend! :)
And I completely agree about Chicago. Cook County is definitely a piece of work. The people I know who live pretty decently do so outside of Chicago in the suburbs and commute in as they need to. I personally would take warmer wheather over suburbia. So I definitely keep the idea of moving to a warmer state in mind.

Girl, I hear ya! The weather here kinda sucks..lol It's either too hot or too cold! Actually, Summer of 2013...I'm moving to Tennessee! Can't WAIT!
All I am saying is that someone who has gotten the minimum grades in all of the pre-reqs and co-reqs ( that would be getting B's in Bio and Chem and C's in everything else = 65 points) would have a better chance of getting in than someone who has gotten straight A's in the pre-reqs ( 52 points). I think the person with straight A's would be better for the program academically. I applied two classes short of all of the possible classes I could have applied with ( I am currently taking Bio 227 and plan to take Micro this summer) and have recieved A's in all of my classes and I am still not sure that I will get accepted. I guess it all will depend on how they rank applicants now. Good luck to everyone applying! Also do they plan on contacting the applicants about the fact that they are extending the date of when the letters will be sent out?

The way folks are talking about changes, who knows what is fact or not. I'm just hoping they did not change the criteria they clearly posted (even on the extended online application). I am doubtful they will let anyone know about the change in noticification for acceptance. I took that as a weedout process, when the director mentioned this change over the phone as if it were common knowledge. If you ask, they will tell you, if you don't..they won't. Just consider yourself lucky (at this point) that you know about it. This is going to be a long month.
