Tri-C in Cleveland

Published

A while ago I posted asking about the nursing program application process at Tri-C. I just wanted to update that I received acceptance into the Spring 2010 semester :D. The process was actually pretty fast. I am very excited. Hope to hear from others that will also start at Tri-C in the Spring.

NewStart2010:yeah:

Well, ScottE, it DOES get you something. It gets you the ability to do your clinicals, because without a background check, no hospitals will let you in. That's the reality of life in 2010.

Think of it in the same way you think of car insurance; you pay money for that every month, but assuming you don't have any accidents, you aren't really getting anything out of it other than the ability to drive legally.

Can you get a lawyer to get this off your record? Or did you already do that? Based on the info on tri-c's website the background check has to be done before being admitted to the program, which is probably why scott got his last minute letter. Maybe call tri-c?

It is being taken off my record. It already shows as dismissed. I'm just essentially "waiting in line" for it to be expunged. I basically have to appear in court and directly state my request to the judge and the prosecutor has to agree and it is immediately removed from my record with no trace of it occurring. My date is in the middle of July.

no way to move that date up? know any lawyers or judges with some pull? hate to say it, but my dad is a lawyer and with the legal system...there are always strings and loopholes -- you could always try the legal clinic at Ohio State...this might be something the students could handle. I know a bunch of judges up here in Cleveland, but none in Columbus. There has to be a way to get this expunged more quickly than July.

I'm engaged to a lawyer who graduated from OSU in 2007 - this is the date after a lot of string pulling and loophole finding. They say a lot of people have to wait up to a year. I'm only waiting 4 months. Apparently the waiting period is also longer for felonies than misdemeanors.

engaged? congrats on that....i assume he is in practice in Columbus? Maybe this whole debaucle is pointing to the CSCC route. If tri-c won't let you start in Spring of 2011 because of this, then maybe you are meant to stay in Columbus and go to CSCC? At my age, I have begun to accept that things happen for a reason and the best case scenario manifests in the end....good luck...you will be a great nurse wherever you end up. And, Spring 2011 to Fall 2011 -- really not a tragedy. If for some reason you don't get into CSCC (which you will), I'm sure you can start at tri-c in Fall of 2011.

I agree with you - rolling with the punches and believing it all happens for a reason makes life a lot less stressful!! I did sign a 1 year lease in Columbus on Saturday, so I'm definitely leaning towards CSCC and it is hard to pass up all the critical care/trauma experience. I guess 9.5 more months of waiting isn't the end of the world :)

I have my acceptance letter for January, but I never received anything about running the background check early. I got charged with a 3rd degree felony when my eBay/PayPal accounts got hacked into. They investigated the case and determined I was a victim and I helped them find the guy that hacked into my accounts and committed the crime. The charges have been dropped, but they won't be expunged until July. I talked to Tri-C and they won't admit me to the program if it shows up on my record.... even being dismissed. If I have to run the background check early, I won't be able to start in January and I'm just not ready to give up that option yet :(

I've worked in some capacity at UH and the Clinic and they all let me work there with it still active on my background check after an explanation, but even with a letter from those hospitals stating that, they still said nope, won't let me in. I even have a letter from the prosecutor stating the charges were a mistake and will definitely be expunged in July.

Reading this from the Ohio BON you are only disqualified if you have either a guilty plea, or a conviction. Which you do not.

Yes, but the charges haven't shown up as dropped yet. I have received notice they will be dismissed, but it hasn't happened yet. I was given the option to pay extra to expedite the whole process, but since I didn't need a background check until November I didn't bother. Too late now... Tri-C said that until the charges officially show up as dismissed I cannot be admitted because the only guarantee of dismissal they will accept is actually showing as dismissed. Even the conviction won't bar me from being a nurse... you need two felony theft convictions and even then you are only barred from working with older adults. However, I tried to get jobs at UH and the Clinic while the charges were still pending with a letter from the prosecutor stating the charges would be dropped and they say no way, so obviously they wouldn't let me do clinicals there either. Blahh... NOT happy with Tri-C.

I tried to call and explain the situation to the nursing program, but the girl who answered refused to let me even explain everything and told me to just put it in writing to the dean and return it with my background check and wait and "see what happens." *****

UGGGGHHHH! So, you have to do the background check right away? 85 bucks for them to pull the file, have the charges show up and say no? Anyway, can you get to the dean before you have to shell out the money? For me, knowing that I would be spending nearly 100 bucks on an outside chance they will go against their policy would be maddening. Truly money down the drain...

Agreed. They have a committee that meets to review background checks and they can't give you any answers until they have the background check and the committee meets. I can't even get anyone to talk to me about it there. I guess this really is a sign that Tri-C is not meant to be...

I did my HESI Exam on March 31th. I called Tri-C last Wednesday and they told me they would be sending the application letters last Friday. I did not receive anything yet. I did well on the test. Grammar was my lowest score (English is my second language), but my avarege score for English was 88.6%. My math score was 96%. I do not want to call them again, so I was wondering if anyone have received any letter from them.
