Tri-C in Cleveland

Published

A while ago I posted asking about the nursing program application process at Tri-C. I just wanted to update that I received acceptance into the Spring 2010 semester :D. The process was actually pretty fast. I am very excited. Hope to hear from others that will also start at Tri-C in the Spring.

I wish Tri-C would give you more than a couple weeks to get things done sometimes. I got a letter today stating that they changed their policy and that I have to have a background check done before May 3rd or else I'll be dropped from the program. Not a huge deal since the place to get finger printed and what not is on my way to work, but it would be nice to get a little more than a couple weeks notice on this stuff.

We get frustrated by the short notice, too. The need to get the background checks done quickly comes from an outside organization (one of the big hospital systems) that likes to spring these sorts of things on us. Every year, the hospitals put more demands on schools in terms of background checks and drug testing and which students they will and will not accept for clinicals.

I will be starting the nursing program this August and I have not received a letter from Tri-C that states that I have to complete background check/immunization before May 3rd. I am a bit concerned. In my acceptance letter it stated that I would receive all the information and orientation date some time in May. Has anyone else here received the letter?

Nope, but currently I start in January. The only thing I received was a letter that stated due to a policy change I needed to have a background check done by May 3 or be dropped from the program. They changed people's status to provisional pending the background check results. I'm not worried about the background check it just pisses me off I have to throw away another $85 on garbage.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will be calling them tomorrow because I do not want to be dropped from the program for not getting the background check done even though I have not received any type of notification. I hear you about the spending, $85 is a lot of money.

$85 is nothing when you get something in return. I spent $85 on that HESI test, and now another $85 on the background check and have nothing to show for it.

It's not likely you'd be dropped. The new standards for admission probably only apply to students entering Spring 2011 and after. You'll probably get your letter for the time and place of orientation in May. At least you'll have most of the summer to get things squared away. My "acceptance" letter said to expect more info in November. Best of luck to me getting everything squared away around the holidays.:uhoh3:

I realize that you see it this way, but, background checks help assure the public that people of integrity are caring for them.

Hey all --

just went onto tri-c's website and saw the announcement about background checks...says that it needs to be completed before applying to the program and gives instructions. I haven't even gotten my letter yet to apply, think they were still waiting for HESI scores to post (I took it March 18th). Can I count on having to do this before I send in my application? wondering if i should try to get it done asap...because once i get that letter i want to send it in asap.

and as always looking for advice....i am pretty much resigned to sticking with tri-c at this point...as much as i would love to get started this fall, Huron just seems too pricey for a diploma program...my husband basically told me if i wanted to spend that much money i should be investing in a second degree BSN program at Kent or CSU. He is right -- we have childcare to pay for on top of my schooling and since I am still paying back loans from undergrad and grad school...well anyway, i am slated to take micro this summer as this is the last required non-clinical course I have to take but I was wondering if I could hold off on that until Fall when the kids are back in school hence saving the money I would have to shell out for someone to watch three kids over the summer..since it looks like Fall 2011 for clinicals for me, I think I am safe by doing this right? If slots open up for Spring 2011 by a miracle I would still have everything done except the 7 nurses courses. Will I be too old to get a job when I am done? Starting in Fall of 2011...graduating in Spring of 2013 I will be 41!!!! How old is too old to become a nurse?

We've had students as old as 68.

WOW! I guess age truly is in the mind...I feel so young, like I just graduated from college not too long ago...oh wait that was nearly 20 yrs ago :D If only I had the foresight to do a nursing degree while at Ohio State, I'd be well on my way to an MSN now or would probably already have one. I am a late bloomer, what can I say?

I don't have any problem with the premise for having the background checks. To be honest I don't have any problem spending $85 on something that returns value to me. Problem is me spending $85 on a background check returns nothing to me, it's basically spending $85 for the sake of spending $85.

I have my acceptance letter for January, but I never received anything about running the background check early. I got charged with a 3rd degree felony when my eBay/PayPal accounts got hacked into. They investigated the case and determined I was a victim and I helped them find the guy that hacked into my accounts and committed the crime. The charges have been dropped, but they won't be expunged until July. I talked to Tri-C and they won't admit me to the program if it shows up on my record.... even being dismissed. If I have to run the background check early, I won't be able to start in January and I'm just not ready to give up that option yet :(

I've worked in some capacity at UH and the Clinic and they all let me work there with it still active on my background check after an explanation, but even with a letter from those hospitals stating that, they still said nope, won't let me in. I even have a letter from the prosecutor stating the charges were a mistake and will definitely be expunged in July.
