I am trying to get a poll on why people became nurses. Please list your top 5 reasons for becoming a nurse and how long you have been a nurse. Thank you

Dunno if I have 5...number one is it felt like a calling; party my co-dependant nature, felt like a healthy outlet for that; I really do have a nurturing side to me. Number two is I had to change careers when I got laid off right before 911 during the last recession and healthcare was really the only field where there were still jobs open.

I can't give you five - I don't think I even understand it myself! When I was 12 I felt a "calling". Yeah, sounds like a cliche'. But it's the truth. From that time on I was driven. I became an LPN in 1973 and an RN in 1981. I do joke that I love the smell of alcohol!

1) I was inspired by the nurses who took care of my husband when he was ill
2) I am interested in science and healthcare in general
3) I wanted to make a difference in my work, and the job I had just didn't cut it
4) I like that there is flexibility in the profession (although not so much now with the economy as it is!)
5) I get to wear scrubs to work!
I'm not going to lie, before my hubby got sick, I was accepted to law school with a $30,000 scholarship. His nurses inspired me to consider nursing. I sat down and made a pro/con list for both professions, and the tie breaker was that nurses get to wear scrubs and lawyers have to wear suits! Lol.

I had one reason only why I became a nurse...
It was a program that could get me a career in a short amt of time and was offered when my Mom was available to watch the baby. Totally fell into it with no idea what it even was.
I tell people that there was divine intervention in it...so many things went so wrong in such a short time to get me into the position I was in when I applied to the program just in the nick of time to get in, and I love it as a career.
