Hello everyone,
I am soon to be 42 years old, April 2007. I am interested in becoming a Registered Nurse...Should I forget about that dream because of my age?

absolutely not. there are so many nursing positions available in most areas that you have great opportunities. secondly, nursing is becoming a second career for many people so being a new "older" nurse is not uncommon.

No way! Just go for it. You will be 42 anyway, so why not be 42 and on your way to being an RN. Never let people knock you down about your age. Some people are lucky enough to start a career young but lots of people change careers and life circumstances. Besides, I think the average nurse is about 40 - 45 years old. Good luck.

this is very encouraging also to me however my nerves are getting to me just thinking about this journey ,i just found out i failed the workkeys math part and starting to doubt my self ( if i cant even pass this test how can i even think about going into nursing) however i have already scheduled my retest and going for refresher class soon ......... so thanks for this site;)
DON'T DO THAT LOSTINTRENTON! Simply because you failed a test you don't give up, you study and re-test until you pass. If you were in allready in the nursing program and failed a test would you quit...:angryfire No! you'd probably do what I would, pout, complain, have a pity party and STUDY AND RETEST!

Okay, I have to share my story. It did take me 7 total years to finish nursing school (pre-reqs and all) I am now 39 and I still remember my first college course, Okay it wasnt even a college course, I called it dummy math,I couldnt pass the algebra part of the math so I had to take a "refresher course" I have now been a nurse for almost 1 and 1/2 years, I am starting my dream job in the emergency in a week. I am so excited :) it truly is never too late.
Ps. I ended up being the speaker on behalf of our graduating class, A night my kids will remember forever. Dont give up on a dream.:pumpiron: :yeahthat: :yeahthat:

I just graduated LPN school at 43.
Planning on pursuing RN in future, but have no immediate plans to do so. (Hubby still waiting for final placement while finishing graduate school).
If I work until 67 (God willing), that's still 24 YEARS of time in this career!!!
One thing I am doing, is taking care of myself (slid in nursing school- absolutely no time for self). Working out (hate it). BUT the job can be very physically and emotionally demanding.
The only one who can take of yourself is yourself....

You are never too old! I graduated last June (2006) and got my RN license in October - I turned 42 in December!
As I was told - you are going to be 40, 45, etc., anyway why not be that age and an RN? :)

Hi Chubby..I was looking for some feedback on the same question you asked..i'm 34 with 3 kids and a wonderful supportive hubby..I have been working as a CNA for 3 years now and think it is time to take the plunge.....Any others out there with a family who did it?Was it really as hard as it seems? I to feel kinda old to be going back to school...I work with quite a few 20 year olds who are either in nursing school or who are all ready RN'S or LPN's.....Im Just going for it...............

I have four kids under the age of 7 and I started my prereqs four years ago. I will graduate with my ASN in May of 2007 and will take the NCLEX in July! I turned 36 this past January. Anything is possible - follow your dreams.
Wow Clarise, YOU ARE THE QUEEN! How did you do it???

I'm a 43 year old NYS Correction Officer, about to retire from state service spring of 08. Have all my pre-reqs done for RN except AP 1 @ 2. I chose nursing as a new carreer for several reasons. My wife of 20 years is an RN and has been for 23 years and is MY HEROE. can't wait to be a colleague of hers.Having the time of my life...
