Too many degrees from one school?

Is getting too many degrees from the same school frowned upon? I have a BSN and an MSN from Western Governor's University and am now seeking MBA studies but wonder if attending WGU is a good idea since it would be all over my resume.

Opinions?

I love the pace and independence of WGU. I also can't beat the cost.

I don't see why. Doctors do it frequently.

Generally, it is not great to get all your degrees from the same place. It's usually a good idea to see different perspectives. But the circumstances under which it might hurt your career prospects are few: most people don't suffer even if they do have limited variety in their educational experiences.

I don't necessarily think it's such a bad thing that you have all your degrees from there. I'll admit, it may seem a tad odd having WGU on all three of your degrees, but you can easily justify it to employers with factors such as the cost and quality of the program. While I would definitely recommend that you get your MBA elsewhere (just so your resume looks a tad more diverse), I don't think getting it at WGU is gonna be a major dealbreaker for employers. I have always been told it is good to have degrees from other schools. Since you already have both a BSN and MSN from the same school, it would be good to diversify yourself and get your MBA from somewhere else. If you just had the BSN from them I would recommend the MBA from the same school, however, you already have the MSN from them. It could look somewhat repetitive even though it is a different degree. There are many other online MBA programs if online is what you are seeking.

I think you should ask yourself..

1. What is it specifically about the WGU program that is unique enough to pursue the degree there versus another school?

2. What other schools are comparable and what benefits do those schools have to offer?

3. Why WGU, if the answer is because you have two previous degrees there, I think you should cast a broader net and see what other schools and opportunities are out there. WGU is not the only MBA online school out there.

4. How does WGU rank in compared to other comparable schools, again what makes WGU the better school. Cost should not be the ONLY factor especially since this is an MBA, many schools are going to have a cost.

I have my BSN and MSN from WGU and feel a bit odd about it, but it hasn't hindered my career. If I were to get a third degree, I would absolutely look to a different university. There is a term for it, called "academic incest," and people in education generally frown on it.

Recently completed BSN at WGU and have started MSN there as well.
