I know last week there was discussion about how nurses were NOT featured in the first episode. Tonight, 10 minutes in, they've shown two nurses talking and working.
the first one addressed how people think that nurses just pass pills and bedpans. well, she talked about it briefly
second one-(or, other viewers, was it the same nurse on a different day witha different hairdo) she was caring for a drunk man. it appears she was giving a bedside report-to another nurse, maybe? they didn't say. anyways, the gentelman was saying how he had to get out of there, had a paper he had to turn in to school in 3 hours, etc. Nurse was telling him that he almost died last night, he wasn't leaving, she had already heard his sob story and she didn't care that he had something to turn in, he should have thought about that before getting so drunk.
Did anyone else who watched that think that she was seriously being rude to him? I mean, if you dont care, you dont care, no one can make you care. But she stood there and told him to his face that she didnt care about what he had to do. Yelling at him like she was his mother. What a great public impression of nurses- its like the Nurse Ratchet sterotype. Yes, it was just an edited clip of an episode, adn possibly taken out of context.....but, she did say it.
and, maybe that was a poor editing job to purposely make her look all snotty....
opinions?

She should have chosen her words more carefully.
However, I think that after a couple of months of taking care of people who do the same things and incur the same consequences , can make you incredibly frustrated.
So that was probably what happened, she was speaking out of her own frustration and not really thinking of the patients feelings.
...Which is a no-no, mind you...
Although not an ER nurse, I understand frustration with patients poor choices. This is also an edited show, so we don't see the whole situation.
Not many nurses shown this episode, but more than last time!
I did enjoy the nurse talking to the resident and advocating for what the patient needed-and showing that the nurse **might actually know more than the resident!** knowledge is a beautiful thing and its nice to show them that the nurses have it to!

Wow!!! That nurse was quite rude....at least that's the way it appeared on t.v.
First, I don't think that I would have my back to a patient in his room, talking about him to another nurse and giving report. She already sounded condescending. If I was that patient, I would've been mad too. And I wouldn't have yelled at him and told him I don't care either.
Second, I wouldn't be seen ON CAMERA, walking down the hallway laughing about it with another nurse. That nurse had bad form. I wonder if she's on here....if so, I would love to get the story from her end!

I actually came to look at some new post when I came across yours. I don't watch a lot of t.v nowadays, so when I saw that there was a new medical show, I decided to check it out. I missed the first 30mins of the show, but from what I did see, I enjoyed it. Since I missed out on the nurse situation, I cannot comment on her actions. However, I have heard of nurses and doctors who are constantly frustrated with taking care of the same patients that continue to neglect their well-being in destructive behaviors. It's not like they dislike their job, just rather, it's disappointing when you are restoring somebody back to health for that person to only go back to their own ways. Nevertheless, it comes with the job and they have to put the patient first regardless of the situation.
My only problem with the show is that it seems like Boston Med had a lot of commercials that takes up too much of the airtime.

Google bostonmed and you can fine their website and watch the first episode in its entirety (this was only the 2nd episode). Tomorrow they will probably have tonights whole episode online.

maybe she could have chosen her words more carefully but we have no idea of what problems he gave her all night and what else she had on her plate. it was also mentioned that this was not the 1st time he had gotten himself into this situation and maybe she felt someone needed to be stern with him to stop this very dangerous choice he was making from repeating itself. maybe if he felt consequences from his actions she could save him from hurting himself beyond repair the next time.
speaking from experience, the er is not a place where you handle repeat offenders with kid gloves. i’m not saying that it is ok to be rude to anyone, but it’s tv, we can’t judge her on a seeing a few seconds of a situation we have no background information on. we as nurses need to give each other a break every once in awhile.

Didn't see the episode, but as someone that works in detox, I've heard it all: both from the patients and from the staff. And yes, sometimes what you say to someone would be highly inappropriate in other settings--sometimes a stern talking to is what they need to see the light. I swear, some of the younger users have never had limits or someone say no to them. I'm considered to be one of the "nicer" nurses. I've seen nurses (even on today's shift) that would say things like what you saw on that show to patients, but I probably would have said something like, "I'm sorry that you have this paper to hand in, but due to your poor choices you need to take care of yourself right now. This other stuff in your life is going to have to wait, as you almost died from what you put into your body, and it's going to need some time to recover. That's just the consequences of your actions. I know it sucks, but we're going to help you through this tough patch and make sure you stay safe." That's just me, though...I don't do the total hard-a&* type nurse. (just the partial one. )

Yea, she didn't have to yell at him, but she was just being a concerned nurse. I really love this show, it's my treat for thursday nights. The couple with the newborn was so cute and I thank God that he survived those procedures, can't wait to see next week's episode! I missed last weeks, doubt they do reruns though!:)

I'm a pre-nursing student, soon to be Nursing student hopefully this fall, but I wanted to check out this show. I watch it a day later on: Watch Boston Med Online Free. It shows all episodes commercial free. But, I thought it was great seeing the nurses and hearing the "medical lingo". I thought the ER Nurse, however, was a bit rude. I do understand her frustration, but I couldn't talk about the patient to another nurse right there in the same room. @SlightlyMental_RN, I do like the response you would have given to the patient. Hopefully, the ER Nurse will see herself on TV and ease up a bit. But, I really like the show.
Also, I'm not a mother, but I thought the woman who was giving birth made it seem easy! I know they edit out a lot of stuff, but woah. It was a treat seeing Sam a year later, chubby and cute.

I actually did my senior practicum in the Mass General ER and I can tell you those nurses are amazing. They are so smart and always on top of their game. And sometimes the trauma area can be totally crazy and dealing with some angry college kid who got too drunk is frustrating. I think she reaction was completely called for and the pt needed to understand the severity of issue. It's tough love but that's the ER. She can't hold his hand and baby him.
It probably seems a lot worse to people who are not familiar with the MGH ER that it seems rude and like the nurses don't care, and maybe the editing contributes to that. It's a very tough setting to work in and all the nurses there are great. Just adding my two cents :)

Both of the full episodes are online to be viewed right now at Hulu.com.
My husband and I watch most of our TV online on this site, during the "commercial breaks" there is usually only one 30-second commercial.
Now I'm going to go watch the 2nd episode..... :)
