Tonight's Boston Med: nurses featured!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I know last week there was discussion about how nurses were NOT featured in the first episode. Tonight, 10 minutes in, they've shown two nurses talking and working.

the first one addressed how people think that nurses just pass pills and bedpans. well, she talked about it briefly

second one-(or, other viewers, was it the same nurse on a different day witha different hairdo) she was caring for a drunk man. it appears she was giving a bedside report-to another nurse, maybe? they didn't say. anyways, the gentelman was saying how he had to get out of there, had a paper he had to turn in to school in 3 hours, etc. Nurse was telling him that he almost died last night, he wasn't leaving, she had already heard his sob story and she didn't care that he had something to turn in, he should have thought about that before getting so drunk.

Did anyone else who watched that think that she was seriously being rude to him? I mean, if you dont care, you dont care, no one can make you care. But she stood there and told him to his face that she didnt care about what he had to do. Yelling at him like she was his mother. What a great public impression of nurses- its like the Nurse Ratchet sterotype. Yes, it was just an edited clip of an episode, adn possibly taken out of context.....but, she did say it.

and, maybe that was a poor editing job to purposely make her look all snotty....

opinions?

Thx, for the link, I'm going to watch tomorrow! I start nursing this fall and I am so anxious, I think August 16, is coming around a little to fast for me! :uhoh3:

I just watched the episode online and Oh yes, she most definitely was rude and seems to have an attitude problem. I'm not even a nurse yet and I know that you do not, by any means, address a patient in such a manner. She needs to get an attitude check. I agree that she really represnts nurses in a bad light. The first nurse seemed nice and empathetic. I wonder if anybody from the Boston BON or anyone over her watched that, if so I hope they address that. Even if a resident has an ego issue you suggest not tell them what dosage to give.

After thinkin about the episode and what happened, that nurse was rude and she went a lil too far flirtin with that old man...lol

I think the cancer patient and his wife were cute along with the young couple and their newborn. As to the nurse, I understand her flirting, humor is a way of coping in the hospital. It makes things go quicker and puts patients at ease sometimes, if used appropriately. With her handling of the drunk patient, she could've been a little better at handling it, but it just gets tiring repeating over and over.

I don't understand why they were still holding him? Support him through intoxication, wakes up coherent, sends him on his way with a bill in his hand. No reason to monitor a patient who has a hangover.

You cannot discharge a patient until his/her ETOH level is below the legal limit. In fact they can't even sign out AMA until ETOH is below the legal limit(although they won't need to because we boot them out the door as soon as they are beneath .08). We've put drunk patient's in restraints several times who got combatitive and tried to leave. I had no problem with the nurse's handling of the situation. I'm not quite that blunt with patient's but have no issues with those who are. Boundries need to be set firmly with drunk patients.

30 or so years ago drunk patients would be at the police station in "the Drunk tank".

As with the media things are edited out. For all we know he could have been grabbing at her, etc.

I don't understand the point of giving report in front of the patient. Then again, I do not work at MGH nor was I there when it happened. Its a very busy ER department that handles everything from drunks to Level 1 Traumas.

I like when she advocated for the patient also. I knew exactly what drug she was talking about before it was even mentioned.

Respect is a two way street. Some docs constantly bash nurses others work together. What matters is that the patient is taken care of.

There are a lot of other health care professions that make recommendations for the Doctors. Nursing, Respiratory, Pharmacy, PT, Dietary, Social Work, etc.

The old couple made me cry! I was so grateful when he came out of the surgery with flying colors! It was cute when she told the doctor "He's my best friend"! tear:redpinkhe

Television editing at its finest I am sure.

I agree with you OP! I was so disappointed in how she spoke to that patient. She was quite rude. Even if part of it was editing, what she said, I think was out of line. All she needed to tell him was that she understood his situation but she couldn't send him home. I'm betting he kept telling her what happened because she probably never really listened or showed any sort of empathy. She already had it out for him when he showed up and vomited on himself. I don't think there is any excuse for the words she chose. She should have walked away if she was getting that frustrated.

I was mainly upset because they portrayed all the doctors to be so polite, then you got this rude nurse. Blah. I hope it's not like that next week.

update on baby Sam:

doing well, dad is home from iraq. 14 months old now.

I loved Mr and Mrs Chew-he was always in such good spirits, and they had such a loving relationship, and appeared to be handling a devastating diagnosis very well. Unfortuanately, that mesothelioma will probably kill him. Its got a really crappy survival rate. I wonder how he's doing..... i'm going to google it
