Told I won't get in to nursing school

Published

So, I got a reply back from my adviser saying the average GPA for my schools nursing program is 3.61 and I have a 3.29. She told me it will be pretty hard for me to get accepted. What do I do? I have all of these nursing prerequisites with nothing to show for. What can I major in now? Is there still a way I can become an RN? I want a BSN bc I would like to move up in nursing.

Thanks

Definitely check before you retake a class. At my school they used to drop the low grade of a class and only keep the repeated grade. Now they keep the low grade and average it with the repeat grade.

yeah I heard they've been doing that at my school too itd prolley be better to take a whole new class...and it sucks that they average them together...:(

You should try looking into hospital programs in your area. I only have a 3.2 GPA and the school I applied to rejected me (Average GPA is a 3.66). So I heard about a hospital in my area that offers the classes thru the school that rejected me. They only need a min GPA to apply (2.75) and get this...they pay for tuition, books, give an education stipened of 175/wk of school, give you a job while in school as a PCT/PCA and a contract as soon as you graduate for 3 yrs! I went thru the interview process and I got in! So you should call your local hospitals and see if they have a earn as you learn type program! :) Worked for me! I start classes Jan 11th! :) Good luck!

can you please check other schools in your area...this is soo ridiculous that schools are setting gpa standards so high!!! please check other schools, your gpa is NOT the worst in the world...someone will accept you! good luck!

I would retake some of the classes your got lower than a A in. Mostly sience and try to get a high B or an A. I know you can do it! I would try to get your ADN first and then get your BSN since BSN programs are far more competitive. Good luck i know you can do it!!!!

1. Apply to multiple schools.

a. Meet with the nursing admissions adviser at each school.

2. Apply to be placed on the alternate list for all schools. (Emphasize that you are willing to start on short notice.)

a. THere are students who drop out at the last minute for almost every class d/t pregnancy, marriage, financial aid issues etc.

3. Apply only to schools that do a subset gpa of prerequisites. (IOW your prerequisite GPA is what counts not your overall.)

4. Apply to ADN programs, and 2 phase LPN programs.

a. ADN still signs RN.

b. 2 phase programs are actually ADN programs where you earn your LPN in phase I and complete RN in phase II.

Don't give up. I just think that widening your horizons will get you where you need to be.

Best of luck

You have a lot of options.

1. Retake classes to raise your GPA

2. Apply to other schools, even out of your area/state if its feasable for you.

3. Get your Associates degree RN and then later do RN-BSN

4. Get a BS in something else and then do an MSN or accellerated BSN program.

Get used to fighting for what you want, its the way things are in nursing, whether it is getting into school, getting a job, getting your patient assignment, talking to doctors, etc. Good luck!

It's not the school that's setting the high standards, not really. The school has X number of seats and probably 4 times that number of students applying. The students know they have to be competitive, since only the highest scores fill the seats, so they wait to apply until they have the highest score they can get. This raises the cut-off score, which makes students work even harder to get every point they can, which raises the cut-off score a little more. The average GPA to get into the program where I'm at is currently right around 3.75 (the difference between 3.7 and 3.75 is 5 points towards the total entrance points).

To the OP, do whatever you can to raise your GPA. Find out if doing volunteer work helps (here 96 hours of volunteer work equals 2 points towards the application).

i understand pada..but it gets so fustrating sometimes, hearing over and over how people who have perfectly good/acceptable gpas cant get into a particular program....but i still think the OP should continue to search other schools/OP ...
