In the US, if there are signs of TB on x-ray, the patient is started on treatment right away. Sputum cultures can take time, and they want to treat as quickly as possible.

Yap, each country has its own protocol. :) Makes me wonder though what is being used for US-bound migrants because dhel mentioned children 14 and below aren't administered x-rays for screening. Guess, mantoux is enough for this age group and there is most prob. a seperate or modified protocol for US-bound migrants other than from the local protocols from both countries and the W.H.O. protocol.

hi suzanne,

glad you raised this up.

this is the situation that my 1-month old baby is in. he's given some propylactic 'treatment' by her pedia.

does this mean he'd have to undergo chest x-ray as well (assuming that the medical exams happen 2-3months from now).

thank you very much, my friend.

During the medicals, my 5 year old daughter was found to be underweight and she was coughing at that the time. The doctor ordered for chest x-ray and the findings were normal.

Although children below 14 years old are not require to undergo an x-ray but if the physician suspects something, he will order one.

Did she underwent the TB skin test first?

Yes, they will do a chest x-ray if they suspect anything. And the amount of radiation in that x-ray in so minute. The amount of radiation that you get in the flight over to the US is much, much greater.

In the US, the babies here are getting TB skin tests now. We do not use the BCG here routinely.

to everyone who posted their thoughts and concerns--thank you!!!:)

i am thinking before that someone has "cursed" us...that's why we're into this situation and giving me and my family broken hearts and dreams....

but then, i came to realized that god is really good...because if not..i have not detected it sooner and have them undergone treatment..

the doctor prescribed rifampicin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide for my youngest..rifampicin and isoniazid will be taken for 6 months while pza is for 2 months only..i also asked if its ok to have xrays evry month and the doctor said its ok..

my eldest and hubby..they'll be having their check up today..

my hubby changed a lot after hearing he has this disease...i think he's depressed..i even asked him to read saunders comprehensive book just to cheer him up...

should i also take meds as prophylaxis or it will only cause me another problem (since anti tb drugs are hepatotoxic)??

thank you!!

You actually should.

( I was just going to say that you need some medication too).

I'm sorry for everything that happend to you and your family. Hope you guys get well soon.

always consult with your doctor. tell you're hubby to cheer up. it's not uncommon in the phils. his doctor most prob. have it too. :chuckle

No, the doctor never ordered that.

No, the doctor never ordered that.

Interesting that Mantoux and CXR are not mandatory for 14 and below and just warranted on mere clinical suspicion. Most TB cases are subclinical.

Most health screenings that I know of require mandatory diagnostics.

I guess the health screening for US-bound migrants aren't that stringent as I once thought of.

Hi hael,

I know someone who had a primary TB and he found out only on the day of his medical. He is not a nurse, he is an engineer applying for working or Immigrant visa. I am not sure which type of visa that was but it's the same process as ours. When the embassy found out about his case, he was asked to undergo 6 months of treatment. Then 6 months later he went back for medical and when they examined him, it was all clear. He was again scheduled for another interview and that's it. He's now in the US.

At least in your case, you knew about it even before your medical. There may be a delay on the processing of visa just like the guy I know but it's not a reason for denial. It is best to comply with the treatment at this time.

I hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless.
