Tired of the BSN, ADN, LPN, CNA argument

I have just got to say this. Ever since I started coming to this bulletin board I get so frustrated and pi**** off at all the bickering by everyone about who is better at this, who's a real nurse and who's not, who has better skills, yada-yada-yada. And the main kicker here that gets me is how everyone is always saying how awful the BSN nurses are, how they think they're above everyone else, how they really don't know sh** - they just think they do. I have yet to see one person write a nice thing about BSN nurses, and I've also yet to see one BSN nurse write an awful thing about ADN's or LPN's. I am a senior BSN student, and I am proud of my education - not because I think it makes me any better than anyone else, not because I think it makes me above butt wiping. Only because it's my goal and I'm achieving it. If it's not your goal to be a BSN nurse, well great. More power to you in whatever your goal is, but you don't have to keep slamming people who do want a bachelor's. I work hard in school. Just as hard as any of you have worked. I have three children to raise, a job to keep up with, a $15,000 debt from putting myself through school, and a life outside of nursing school just like other people. But on top of that I have this goal, though I'm beginning to wonder why. I absolutely love working with patients, and I know that I'll love the work as an RN, but the one thing that makes me want to run away screaming is all the attitudes. It's sad.

just a quetion if you are sick and tired of the bickering why did you write the post. I am so happy that there are BSN's! Truly I don't want your job, I don't envy your pay. I am quite sure that I don't have all of your skills. So if you are sick and tired of the bickering don't start threads that are sure to start the arguing all over again. Good Luck in shcool. I hope nursing is everthing you want it to be.

That's a fair question...why did I start the thread if I'm sick of the argument. Here's the answer: the subject will undoubtedly come up again. It comes up at least once a week, and this time...before all the negative comments and mean things start being thrown about, I wanted to make sure I said what I've been dying to say for months now. In the now famous words of Rodney King "Can't we all just get along?"

"I have yet to see one person write a nice thing about BSN nurses, and I've also yet to see one BSN nurse write an awful thing about ADN's or LPN's. "

You obviously didn't look very hard. We're all guilty (LPN's, ASN's, and YES BSN's). There's also positive things written about all. I agree with LPNANDLOVEIT1, if you're tired of the argument, then why start ANOTHER tired thread with the same argument? That's a lame reason, you could have given your opinion on one of the other threads debating this already.

We can all get along, but there will always be differences of opinion. We are human after all.

If it doesn't apply to you, then it shouldn't offend you..

My 2cents worth

I can't imagine that EVERYONE has said something bad about BSNs. I know I certainly haven't. I respect everyone for whatever kind of education they choose, be it LPN, ADN, BSN, or further. There will always be lazy, bad nurses, but it is definitely NOT related to educational level. And of course, there will always be awesome nurses who do great jobs, regardless of their title. I wish people could get past this.

I agree with some of the previous posters, why bring it up again at all? I for one have NEVER made a negative statement about RN's at any level. How can you make the statement that everyone is saying negative things about BSN's? I believe, as I have stated before, if you're the type of person that puts people down, you'll do it in nursing or if you work at the local drug store. It's a people thing. I work side by side with many nurses, some are good, some I wouldn't let touch my critters, some LPN's and some RN's. I sorta have the feeling you have already placed a chip on your shoulder and are looking to defend yourself and your position. You don't have to. If you're a good nurse, that's your best defense. If you turn out to be egotistical and offensive to the "lower classes", that will be blamed on your "BSN" by many but as I see it, you either are or you aren't and you are what you chose to be. I refuse to be made to feel inferior because I am an LPN, because I am good at what I do, but I would never say I have the education of an RN because I clearly do not BUT an RN coming out of school could learn a lot from an experienced LPN. There has been many debates about LPN assessment skills and all I can say is if you're been an LPN for a long time and haven't improved your ability, then you're just in it for the check and you need to move on. I personally read everything I can to education myself and increase my knowledge so I can care for my residents better. Do I have the education of an RN, NO, but I don't limit myself and I continue to increase my knowledge. PLEASE erase the whole debate from your mind because even though you may not think so, it will effect you in the long run. What is boils down to, is we can all learn from each other and we should respect each other. I have said this before and I'll always stick with it, it's a people thing. I try to live by, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If you live your life that way, you cannot fail. Good luck and I wish you much success in your nursing career.

Hi. I've posted comments under NurseMark's topic on the failing of nursing. But, I'm going to add some additional comments. I'm not mad or peeved about the nursing title discussions, but I'm a little frustrated. I've been through several different education programs (CNA, diploma, BSN), and am contemplating going back to school in my middle age to become a CNS or NP. It's true that posters on this bb from every nursing background have shown disrespect for others with different backgrounds.

What I'm perplexed by is that some of the posters started their careers in a similar fashion to mine, but yet, they seem to show contempt for their BSN degree. Some BSN posters would write that they started out as a CNA, went for their LPN, got their ADN, then went back for their BSN, but, for some reason their BSN was meaningless in terms of the gains from the program. What was the point of staying in the BSN program?

Much ado has been made about standing up for ourselves, our work, and our profession. I don't understand why some of us with BSNs would downplay our achievements. Is it to avoid attacks from those with other credentials? Is it to fit in? I will readily admit that I'm irritated by the fact that my BSN is not recognized as important at the bedside or for line positions, but I feel blessed to have it. I don't flaunt it either. This is different then showing contempt or downplaying my education.

Congratulations to those of you who have recently graduated from the various programs. Even though you or unfortnately someone else may decide to change your title at some point, your education will be with you for the rest of your life. Best wishes.

Chuckie,

Other than nursing management, WHAT job outside of nursing will accept a BS in nursing and would not accept an Associates? I don't follow what you're talking about.

Hi nurs4kids. Although it's gradually changing, in my neck of the woods, a nurse still does not need a BSN to be in management. He/she just need to have a fair amount of clinical experience and be in the right place at the right time and know the right people.
