This was too funny ... I had a patient on Saturday who was VERY high maintenance -- literally screaming (in my ear, ouch) in pain. Screaming. My charge nurse thought she was a psych patient! In any case, I took care of her pain, and her. After she was discharged, I took her by wheelchair and helped her into her husband's truck. Then her husband followed me back to the door, pulling out his wallet as he walked after me. He pulled out a $50 and tried to hand it to me, I couldn't believe it! LOL!! I've never had anyone try to tip me before. Of course, I didn't accept it. He kept trying to hand it to me, and I explained that we couldn't accept money, but that his offering it was nice in itself. (I shoulda told him to buy us all pizza with it, but I didn't think of that until later ... oh well!)

My husband is a tattoo artist, and he gets tips all the time ... but this was the first time someone tried to tip me! :D

Nice to be appreciated, eh?!!! :saint:

tipped seen it done many times .

I agree with Harleyhead. Tipping happens all the time. Sometimes I wonder what is the big deal? No, I haven't taken it but I see no harm if the patient insists.

I've always had a theory the hospitals would prefer it if we worked solely on tips, if only it wasn't considered "unethical." Maybe we nurses should push for it. The hospitals would love it because they wouldn't have to pay us, heaven knows we're highly trained in customer service skills, and finally we'd be properly motivated to send the Press-Ganeys through the roof.:clown:

janhetherington;

Why do you feel it is unethical?

I've never been offered a tip as a nurse, but I was offered a tip two or three times as a PCT, when I wheeled a discharged pt down to their car. I explained it wasn't allowed, but one of the pts absolutely insisted that I take a few dollars. I gave it to the hospital volunteer group, as I didn't feel right keeping it.

Thats nice, but my question is "WHY" don't people feel "right" keeping it?

Don't you feel "right" getting paid by your employer?

Do you feel that you're already getting paid what you're worth and any more is unnecessary?

People often say that they "don't feel right" taking a tip - but, it's hard for a lot of people to state exactly "why" they don't feel right....

-just wondering

Okay, I understand that - but I'm challenging you guys to think deeper than "just because I was told not to"....

With the recent emphasis on "evidence based" practice, we have called to scrutiny things that we were just "taught" to do unquestioningly. Now we are starting to look at the reasons and rationales.

So back to the question, yes, you may have been taught not to accept these things, but WHY???????

Any takers?

Those not in their head from drugs you gave them might gift money they can't really afford to.

Maybe because those who could afford to tip (or at least appear that way) might get better treatment.
