So on 1/20/23 I requested to be off on April 6,7,and 10. I have ample vacation. I had a friend who bought plane tickets to come see me. I did put on the request that I had a friend coming in from out of town. On 3/29/23 my manger informs me that she cannot grant my request. WOW!?!?! We are short staffed, true, but still an unacceptable response. Not my damn problem and certainly not something I can help with a week and a half out! It turns out my friend ended up having to cancel. I informed my manger that I can modify my request to just April 7th, but that is the best I can do. And she is still telling me she is going to try to let me have the day off. I laugh in my head because I'm a bit like *** I'm not going to be here 4/7/23, get ready. I like my manager, and I feel sorry for the fact that she has no staff....but again not my problem.
But this really makes me want to start looking elsewhere. I can't give you a 2 month notice for time off and be guaranteed to have it? Or at least be notified rather quickly after submitting the request that I can't have it? That's some ***.

You've complained here multiple times about your job. And you're just NOW thinking about starting to look elsewhere? I agree that it's *** that you put in your request on 1/20, and did not get a response for over 2 months. That's totally unfair. Another benefit to being unionized - *** like that would not happen. I have to give a "yes" or "no" to time off requests within 7 days of when they're submitted.

Thank you. Yes I have been looking. But I have not seen many union positions here in Texas. Also, I'm not commuting anymore....this job is 15 minutes away from my house. UTMB is the only employer within an hour of my home. I'm not commuting to Houston.

I have not seen any jobs in Texas that a union for RNs. My current employer does not have a union. Thank you
Sorry I interpreted your post as if you are currently working in a union position.

I work at a unionized hospital and I haven't heard of this. It all comes down to the collective bargaining agreement that's in place (unless there's a statewide law of course).
Unionized or not that's some ** management. Really doesn't help staffing issues when you don't even take care of the ones you have.

I see you are being held hostage. If your time off requests are always denied.. what happens to your accumulated time off?

Welcome to profit focused healthcare where short staffing is a business model and nurses are viewed as costs until they want time off... then they suddenly convert to irreplaceable assets.

Of course it's CBA-dependent. My point was simply that no good union would allow *** like that to happen, where a manager could ignore a PTO request for 2 months and then deny it a week before.

I would keep my vacation plans the same and enjoy my time. PTO is not a request in my eyes, it means prepare the others ?
