Thoughts on Apple's Mac

Hey all

Ive been a PC girl for quite awhile. Im thinking about getting a Mac eventually. The new Macbook to be more specific or what ever new mac laptop comes out when i get the hunkering to buy a new laptop. Any thoughts from Mac users out there, anyone who has had both pc and mac laptops?

Thanks

Mac's are the bomb. Hands down. Will never buy another PC related anything.

Actually, Mac's are becoming PC related, especially in the last year.

Apple is now buying Intel processors and using the Windows operating system for some of their Mac's ... which means they're basically going PC.

My guess is they had to do it to survive, especially with the accounting scandals and such. They just had to revise their earnings down quite a bit recently.

If you think your Mac is different, it may actually not be so different, especially in the future. You might want to just go straight PC and save some money instead ... if that's all you'll be getting anyway.

Actually, they're only using the intel chip. They still have the same old mac operating system which is much better than the regular PC in regards to holes and constant operating errors. I have the new macbook with the intel chip and nothing has changed about the operating system that I was told. I hope that's true:)

Uh ... not according to Apple:

Apple - Intel

"Now every Mac ships with an Intel processor ...."

Of course, Intel processors do contain Intel chips.

Hmm..that's interesting. I was just in Apple the other day to figure something out and the guy told me that I have the Apple operating system with only the chip. Perhaps it is the newest ones out? Mine is relatively new, but knowing how quickly computers change, mine is probably considered "old" now. I do suppose though, if I did have the intel processor, I would be getting viruses since there are soooo many holes?

It does still contain the Apple Operating system... OSX or Tiger for short.

Apple does use the Intel chips.

Viruses are based on the Operating System and not the CPU (chip).

(I am typing this messsage on a three month old Core DuoII I-Mac.)

Viruses are based on the Operating System and not the CPU (chip).

Which means ... here comes the viruses ...

Again, from Apple's website:

Apple - Get a Mac - Run Windows

"You can even run Windows Software ...

Simultaneously download your corporate email in Outlook using Windows while editing a home video in iMovie using the Mac OS. Or how about this multi-tasking example from Mossberg: “I was able to do email in Apple’s Mail program while simultaneously watching a baseball game in Internet Explorer.”

Now why do you think Apple is going with Windows? Because they had to. Just like they had to go with the Intel processor.

Macs are starting to look a lot like PC's to me, except they cost more.

:monkeydance: I think you have misinterpreted your information. The processor is not an operating system! They are adding Windows in to make it easier for Macs to communicate with PCs probably for business purposes.

Apple is gaining market share and aren't having trouble surviving. It's the PC users that would like to think this way.

I think you're confusing my post with somone else's. When did I say that the processer is the operating system? I didn't. I know the difference between the two.

Read Apple's site. They're going with Windows because people want the Windows OS ... which will help them sell more computers.

Just a reminder: this whole conversation started because people were stating they'll never go back to PC. I was merely pointing out the fact that the Mac is becoming more like a PC with the Windows OS and Intel processor.

Afterall, the standard PC has the Windows OS and an Intel processor. And, for years, Apple refused to use the Windows OS or the Intel processor in their Macs. Now ... they are, probably because the marketplace demands it.

My husband worked in the semiconductor business for 25 years. I asked him to digest some of the postings and try to explain it as there is some incorrect information going around here.

"Apple went to Intel because the previous vendor (IBM) could not keep up with speed and power demand requirements for the CPU chips. This relates to transistor size and the capital equipment investments required to make transistors smaller and closer together on the chips. Intel and AMD are the only US companies that can afford to buy the sophisticated equipment and develop the related manufacturing processes.

Apple had to write its operating systems to work on the Intel chip designs, and has done so with every version of OS X because it saw the competitive shifts taking place in the chip manufacturing industry. The operating system itself has the security features that make it easy or difficult for virus writers to attack it; it does not matter who made the chips. If Apple computers were dominant, virus writers would spend their time attacking OS X instead of Windows. It is easier to attack Windows than OS X, as well, so there is presently little incentive for virus writers to attack OS X.

Apple has released software that allows users with Intel-based Apple computers to boot Windows in a partitioned sector of their hard drive. The user has to supply his/her own licensed copy of Windows. This is to allow people who wish to use Apple computers to use applications that only run under Windows. Clearly, running Windows with an Internet connection opens the user to all the security issues associated with Windows. However, it is cheaper to buy a Windows machine for users who only want to run Windows-based applications. It only makes sense to boot Windows on an Apple machine if there is some legacy software that requires Windows, but all other uses are within OS X. Thus, it is not true that "here come the viruses."

The OSX operating system can still have Janguar, Panther, Tiger and soon to come is Leopard. It depends what series you have running in OSX. Tiger is just the latest.
