This week, I have learned... (8/8)

This week, I have learned....

1. I have never in my adult life slept through an alarm clock. I only learned (realized?) that because last night was the first time ever that I DID sleep through and alarm clock.

2. I have learned the one thing that as a nurse, I hate to do most: convince patients with dementia to take their medications.

3. A bad day at work feels even worse when it's your first day back after vacation.

4. It still upsets me a bit deeply when Alzheimer's patients get shipped to us from a nursing home and they are absolutely terrified of us doing pretty much anything, regardless of how gentle we are. I know that a lot of dementia is irrational, but what if some kind of abuse really is happening regularly? It's sad. :(

5. My kid stole my telemetry/dysrhythmias book and notebook. He's been reading it at bedtime.

7. The coworker I dislike the most professionally (lazy, rude), turns out to be an amazing charge nurse. Pleasantly surprised!

8. I genuinely want to find a way to practice IV skills. I'm just so tired of being bad at them.

What have you learned this week?

Specializes in Oncology; medical specialty website.

This week I have learned that when someone hands you lemons and you decide to use them to make lemonade, that same individual will complain that the lemonade has lemons.

So you've met my MIL, I see.

I learned that my future boss is impressed with and listened to me after telling him my 11 year old is a possible appy.

HE WAS!

(after being scanned and stuck per my insistence.)

Poor bubby. Surgery tomorrow, it hadn't ruptured yet.

How is he?

I've learned that I can let go of my kid.

Adding, I haven't yet. We just drove him down south to school and are driving back to NY tomorrow... But I can let go.

I think.

I just learned this week that my forefathers are a tough lot.....and I need to live up to them!

My family and I met a Russian couple while in Canada. They told us a little of how Russian education is.....and I though nursing school was hard!

I have decided to brace up for the start of my second semester in LPN school! I will try to hold on tight and keep a stiff upper lip! No complaining allowed for me..period.

I am not one to moan and groan over something, but I have done my share at times when cogs get clogged in the machinery.

Thanks for this thread; I love learning all of the new things other people learn!

See ya'll later.....

1. Giving a dying hospice patient a total bed bath, shampoo and shave may have been the most rewarding thing I have done this week.

2. There are a lot of dishonest and lazy people in this world.

3. Hugging/cuddling my sons after a long day feels amazing! Hugging and cuddling my best dog friend after a long day is pretty awesome too!

4. Cancer makes me very angry, and sad.

5. Doctors who truly care about their patients and want what is best for them not only make my job so much easier, but also make working in hospice nursing an amazing journey!

That the FDA has just approved the use of OxyContin in children as young as 11.

Even with the "strict controls" apparently in place, anyone else feel a little queasy about this?

A little, but on the other hand, children with permanent or terminal conditions that cause pain might benefit from that.

Eta - the saddest thing I think is the thought that pediatric pain management could be a legit specialty. :(

I've learned that when you work only on weekends....those weekends come quick....hehehehehe
