This is why you should be careful what you post on facebook

I saw a news item from the Kansas City area that four students were suspended because they took pictures posing with a placenta and posted them on facebook...As I mentioned 100 times in other threads, my particular schooled laid it right out there on the line that they would take disciplinary action, up to and including removing you from the program if you post inappropriate material...I really think you're playing with fire if you start to either 1) air your grievances or 2) post tasteless content on facebook.

I read the article about that story, but what I keep wondering when I see these stories, is how are the administrators seeing these posts and what-not? Doesn't keeping your profile set on "private" keep unwanted eyes off your page? Or are these people who are set on "public"?

The specifics of this event originated within the school itself and reflect on both the school and those involved so I beleive their actions were correct. On the other hand the corporate mantailty that it is also lawful to control an employee's personal life seems to be getting so bad that our American Constitutional RIGHT to free-speach is truely being infringed upon. Case-and-Point; To party while on your own time and to tell my friends is an American Freedom I fought and was wounded for when I served this country (not the corporations) in the military. I am ashamed of the corporations that are infringing this right! I am ashamed of the politicians that allow them to do this. My wife is the nurse and I am a retired engineer. Over the years I have quit every corporation that represented unethical charactor, did not represent my morals or was not in "MY" best interest to work for. This is one of the basic American freedoms I fought for. When it comes to a job or schooling corporations have no rights regarding the personal behavier while off duty that are to be held above the rights of individual freedom. My personal time is just that MINE! It seems that this country is moving down a road of total government and corporate control over the people. This means only one future for the USA,,, Anarchy! The people will rise up and push back for this is also lawful and written into our constitution. The citizens of all civilizations have done this throughtout all of history. This is too bad!

They are able to be reinstated back in the nursing program but I bet those teahcers are going to ride the you know what out of them. The rest of their time in nursing school is be terriable(not that its right bc they still should be treated fairly).

We all make mistakes but we shouldnt want to basiclly stone someone for it. I'm sure a lesson was learned.

Their prfessor said that all 4 girls were very good students and very professional; so if they get back in, I doubt the prof is really going to give a crap one way or another; she's got many many other students to be concerned about too.

I think it's kind of funny. Not that they got suspended but because the kind of picture they took, lol. But of course I have an odd sense of humor. This is why if you have a facebook account, make your pictures private....I don't understand why people don't do this. I also don't understand why they suspended them. The name of the person who once owned the placenta wasn't posted, right? So what is the big deal?

It's a big deal because it's seen as being disrespectful to the person the placenta came from. It might not matter to you, but what if it matters to them? There are people who would be very uncomfortable with a part of their body put up on display for other people to gawk at. And discomfort aside, there are privacy issues, even if the patient wasn't identified.

If I found out someone took a picture of something that was removed from me, and that picture wasn't for medical purposes, I would be furious - even if I would have freely given my permission if asked.

I respect your opinion and I understand how you feel. I just don't think it's a big deal. Taking a picture with a drooling comatose patient is one thing but taking a picture of a placenta, to me is 100% less drastic. The patient wasn't identified and there's NO way for anyone to find out who it belonged to....and so what if someone did, it's only a placenta. I wouldn't care one bit if someone took a picture with either of mine, lol.....I actually asked beforehand to see both of mine after giving birth...thought it was pretty cool. If a couple nursing students felt the same way then so be it.

At the risk of stirring the pot (which clearly does not need stirring), legally there is nothing wrong with posting pics of yourself with a placenta or any other *unidentified* tissue or body fluid on Facebook or any of the other social sites. Where the problem comes in is when you identify yourself as a professional (whether you're a student or not is irrelevant) of ANY profession and expect there to not be a backlash. You have the right to do stupid things like take pictures of horrible disfigurement, digits, placentas, body fat obtained from liposuction, etc (as long as they aren't identifiable and therefore subject to HIPAA laws). You have the right to post them online. But your school has the right to point out what an ass you are and throw you out of school for misconduct and besmirching their good name.

School is not the government (obviously). The government may well grant you your first amendment rights (for the moment anyways), but nursing school is not obligated to mind your civil rights. If you must post content like that on your Facebook page, perhaps you should think about whether or not you are mature enough to enter a profession at all.

I deactivated my account. There is too much of this going on. I don't want to be guilty by association. Besides I have heard some HR people, as part of a background check, searching potential employees on facebook. Now, this is rumor of course, but I would not be surprised.

They definitely do, and that is exactly why my Facebook profile is private and no one is able to search for my name to find me. I have nothing illegal or shameful on my Facebook - I'm friends with many of my nursing classmates - but I don't want to be passed over for a job just because of my announced religious or political views. Of course, that would be very illegal, but I'm sure it's happened before.

I'm personally going to post on facebook when I'm accepted to nursing school and the day after that I'm closing my account. I dont want anything that anyone or myself put what I have worked for in jeopardy. Call me whatever you want but life has been drastically changed since social networking has come about and the way we communicate.

I did the same thing! I consider myself a responsible person. I do not drink, party or do anything crazy, but like you, I have worked too hard to get my spot that jeopardizing my spot for something very preventable is insane. I started Nursing school 3 days ago and have been facebook free and don't even miss it like I thought I would. Just think of how much extra time I will have to study since I won't be on facebook!:yeah:

A doctor I work with has a pic of him suturing someones face on facebook.

HR or anyone who wants to can search for me on Facebook, they won't be able to see anything except my name and a thumbnail version of my profile picture. This is because there are PRIVACY SETTINGS ON FACEBOOK.

Why the concept of locking down an account is so difficult, I don't understand. The only people who see my account, are people who I allow to see my account.
