This is why you should be careful what you post on facebook
The specifics of this event originated within the school itself and reflect on both the school and those involved so I beleive their actions were correct. On the other hand the corporate mantailty that it is also lawful to control an employee's personal life seems to be getting so bad that our American Constitutional RIGHT to free-speach is truely being infringed upon. Case-and-Point; To party while on your own time and to tell my friends is an American Freedom I fought and was wounded for when I served this country (not the corporations) in the military. I am ashamed of the corporations that are infringing this right! I am ashamed of the politicians that allow them to do this. My wife is the nurse and I am a retired engineer. Over the years I have quit every corporation that represented unethical charactor, did not represent my morals or was not in "MY" best interest to work for. This is one of the basic American freedoms I fought for. When it comes to a job or schooling corporations have no rights regarding the personal behavier while off duty that are to be held above the rights of individual freedom. My personal time is just that MINE! It seems that this country is moving down a road of total government and corporate control over the people. This means only one future for the USA,,, Anarchy! The people will rise up and push back for this is also lawful and written into our constitution. The citizens of all civilizations have done this throughtout all of history. This is too bad!

Can a hospital legally force you to get your bsn if you are an adn
Any business can set higher entry level standards for a postion. Depending on your state they would just fire a person who does not fullfill the new requirements. Having said this I know an ASN nurse who is recruited hard for Charge Nursing Positions all over the country. She says she has no desire to pursue a BSN. I have to say that with her 30 plus years experience she can shame any nurse or in many cases doctors in ever met. I know doctors that consult her on occation. She may be the exception but there are many super ASN's out there that will quit the profession before going back to school. The reason is that the average age of a nurse in the USA is now 48, so returning to school as your career is whinding down just does not seem like a reasonable expectation. Sure there are ASN's that need more experience but I also know many BSN's that, in my opinion, will never make it! Books only help you become a good nurse they can not make you a good nurse.

Really disappointed with the reality of nursing.
If is called due diligence. You evidently did not do any research on the career before jumping in. Over worked and/or very long hours is the number one response.

I'm sure this has been said.. MA's calling themselves Nurses
In my opinion, anyone who helps a patient is a nurse. The basic label "nurse" has not become some new fancy elevated position brought on by colleges and technical schools handing out degrees or cerificates. No, to be a nurse all you have to do is personally work to provide care to a patient. Okay, yes, you are no longer a basic nurse; with your LPN you are a more learned and therefore more adavnced nurse. Would you say that all the nurses prior to the degree and certification programs were not nurses? Hey, tell the MA that you are a LPN and be proud of it!!! You are more than just a basic nurse! Wow!

What are the worst call in excuses you've heard?
Here is a new one. As far as we know this one had never been used at our facility before. The front page in our local newspaper had a story about a man's truck that had been stollen. The thiefs were caught when they put diesel in the tank. The truck was gas not diesel. The cops spotted the truck at the service station. They were still trying to get it started. Okay march forward two weeks. We started getting call-ins from nurses who had accidentially put diesel in there vehicle. Yeah one person may do this but we had six call-ins over 4 weeks. Yeah right! I'm just sayin! Also they were back at work the next day. It took two days of work to clean out the stollen truck's tank, fuel lines, injectors, etc... If you are planning to use this excuse, please take several days off or ask for a ride the next day just to make it believable!

screaming doctors....how can we handle them?
I ignore them and just do my job.

If you had a choice between 2 year community, or a university....
In my 37 years as a nurse I have found that the school or pragram you attended has very little to do with how good you are as a nurse a few years down the road. Any program that is well founded is enough. Great RN's continue to learn for their entire career. I have met very proficient nurses from small colleges and nurses who are dumber than a box of rocks who graduated magna from the "so called" best schools in the USA. Sure there are few nurses who graduate from the great schools who are great nurses but I think they move on to other positions in research or such. Some also decide to teach. Just my personal feeling!

Factory worker one day ... nurse the next?
You read more into my responce than it said. What I stated has been and continues to be the entire truth about nursing graduates. I graduated with 16 and I am the only one still in nursing. I did not say you would or would not quit however the historical evidence indicates you will. This does not mean that the system should not give you the chance. While who paid for the education actually does play a roll in data it still does not state for a fact that you will be one of the quiters. Also, the data indicates that the willingness to stand for long hours and work hard is only part of the job. Only a few quit because of the standing and working hard. Most just burn out quickly. The wheat is separated from the chaf when the dirty smelly bed pans need to be changed and cleaned. Yes, new nurses may have to do this too at times. Then it is time to wipe the brown smelly stuff from patient's butts. What about the Doctor/s who believe they are gods. You must do what they say just the way they say it or risk being fired. I have seen two good nurses fired for this in the last six months. Also making the patients family mad can get you fired. There is a political side of playing the game. We lost another good nurse to this. Ah, there are the patients that screem at you all day. Yes, you must attend to them too, you can not just go away. As hospital staff 50 tp 60 hours is about right but I have seen 70 to 80. I work many 14 to 18 hour shift and have worked 34 hours only to take a two hour nap then continue on. Sure sounds like you are determed to survive and I hope you do, but like I said, check back with us in 2013 and we will see. Good Luck,

Is It Possible An LPN Can Make More Then An RN?
I have always believed that compensation should be based on the value of the employees contribution. I was convince of this in the early 1990's as I found that I made a lot more money than the manager that I worked for who sat on her butt in an office. However, in this case I believe that an RN is worth more than an LPN only in that all the federal and state regulations support put the results of patient care on the back of the on the RN in charge and not on the LPN. That in and of itself has a nice dollar sign attached to it. If you are in fact "lawfully" responsible for the results of the LPN then I sugguest you use this as your arguement for higher pay. If you are respeonsible for "this LPN" then you have no arguement. The RN that is in charge has one. You would have to know the pay of the LPN/s you are on chare of. The pay your quoted is higher than the norm for an LPN!

Factory worker one day ... nurse the next?
First off, we need to understand all the laidoff workers are going to school on the taxpayer ticket. Of course they were tax payers once also and have earned this. On the other hand we must also understand that the historical data indicates that most nursing students leave the trade the first year after graduation. I believe this is mostly driven by the fact that most nursing students are searching for a good paying career only to find a career, that in most cases, is so physically demanding that they do not have the personal drive to continue it. This testifys to the fact that not everyone is suited to nursing. Everyone can study, take a test and graduate from a school, but it will be 2 or 3 more three years before we will know if the taxpayers money was well spent. Yes, this is a blue collar job. I wish these new nurses good luck and I just hope a few of them have the work ethic and personal drive to make this tax payer investment a worth while one.

Warning to New Grads
Ah, another nurse discovers that America means Capitist Profit Generating Healthcare System. It will be difficult to find a reasonable nursing job. And remember this. Americans are the most over worked and efficient workers in the world. This is a proven fact. Hum, maybe this why we make more money. But yes, in the end, while higher wages means more spending money it also breeds inflation!

Someone should warn people!!!
Keep searching. Because RN's are so expensive many companies use 6 or 10 to 1. 6xLPN to 1xRN.

Someone should warn people!!!
This is a common in every occupation! Just keep looking.

Mind Boggling - Not going to graduation?
Not sure what religon if any but some religons shun rewards and/or all pridfull events. An LDS friend of mine makes hugh donations to charities with no name attached. I mean thousands. He also has never attended any graduation event and he has a PHD. He is not shy, he just says it is his contribution to his personal humility. I am not this way but I do respect his right to choose !

Why Are So Many Students Worried About Expensive Tuition
Taking on what I would call, a massive credit burden, is a personal choice but personally I believe "all" credit is bad under any condition. The very reason our economy is in such bad conditon is because so many people have already barrowed and SPENT their future. In most cases, a future that could not afford to spend. So, here they are,,, in the future they have already spent. Okay, having said this, I must confess that I had to use a FEW student loans as I attended UG School. However, I only used only a minium and I took the money only three times in four years. Of course not everyone is willing to eat only one sandwitch a day and zero social dollars. So far I have never met a brand new RN with only an UG Degree that was offered $70/yr; even in NY. Sound like great pay as long it doesn't come with a 24/7/365 job. Burnout ! As long as you consider credit as bad and only a last resort you will be a happy camper even in a really bad economy. I have never even barrowed to buy a car. What liz said !
