Hi I am thinking about relocating to America any advice about living there, working there the goods and the bads please help if you can
thanks Gods
Gods: we are moving to Arizona and i have a job lined up with a hospital in phoenix, the delays continue but ever the optimist still believe we will get this year albeit at the end. We are going to Phoenix in August for a vacation so will be able to have a good look round, so concentrating on the vacation at the moment and trying to put the I140 at the back of my mind.
hi everyone! i'm quite new here and i've just started reading some posts about relocating to the US. i think this forum is really great especially for people like me. i've been a nurse here in the UK for about 5 yrs now and my ultimate goal is to work in the US as living here in the UK is not very cheap and now that the NHS is in crisis. i'm starting from scratch so i hope some of you guys can give me advice. i'm in the process of self-studying for the NCLEX and i was wondering if there's anything i can sort out at this point while studying like paperworks or documents that can be processed while i'm reviewing. is it still advisable to go thru an agency coz i havent applied yet on any agency. i was actually thinking of just doing this by myself since i'm gonna find it quite difficult to go to an agency which is more likely based in London as i have a 2 yr old daughter. at this point my husband an i are working on a very tight schedule to make sure somebody stays with my daughter at home as we don't want to leave her with a childminder which costs a fortune here in UK. do most of the states now only require NCLEX passer? if so what states still require both CGFNS and NCLEX? i don't mind which state i go to as long as it will only require me to take NCLEX and IELTS. and roughly how long does the process takes once i've passed the exams? i hope this forum will help me achieve my goal as i really want to relocate to the US. thanks in advance!

Hi Chin-chin
Welcome to the site. I would suggest having a look on the international forum as there are a couple of stickies which should be able to help you. Process can vary from 12 months onwards depending on delays with documentation and CGFNS as you will need to go through them depending on what state BON requires and also visa screen as that is a requirement for immigration
Good luck
hi, i came with ogp and i have been in the states for 2 years now. i have finished my 40 hour a week, 18 month contract. i had a good experience, even although all the waiting and lack of information that didnt come from ogp didnt help. even if you go it alone and get a hospital to sponsor you, they will expect you to sign a contract for an allotted time. although you do get to choose where you go. that wasnt an issue with me, so it didnt matter. you are not a travel nurse until you have some us experience, at least one year over here before the travel companies will touch you. its all in the past now for me, its very different to be a nurse here, and everyone will have different experiences in different hospitals and areas.
if you are serious about coming then i would start the immigration process and n-clex asap as it all takes so very long. especially at the moment.

thanks for the replies. so what immigration documents can i start processing now while preparing to take the nclex exam? i'm planning to go to nj which from what i learned will require ces. if its not too much to ask can i have a step by step process so i'm not gonna be lost. thanks.

You can't start any immigration process off until you have passed NCLEX and then your employer has to file, you can't. You also need to get visa screen from CGFNS as that is something you will need for your interview at the embassy all you will need to do is complete requirements for the Visa screen and then when you pass NCLEX is arrange with your BON to send relevant notice that you have passed. The certificate will then be issued. The international forunm has a couple of threads which give step by step what to do
Good Luck

In that case i have to focus mainly on passing the NCLEX at present and hopefully after that the rest will follow. Thanks.
have you registered with a BON yet?
Not yet. I'm still in the process of reviewing but i'm planning to go thru the NY route as advised by Suzanne, it's one of the easiest way then probably have endorsement to NJ which is really my choice. Or do u think i can go straight in applying to NJ? I'll probably give myself a good 3-6 mos review then i will apply for ATT as it expires within 90 days.
any advice that suzanne gives you is beneficial. she is not an advocate of OGP which is the way that I came. so I couldnt give you any advice on going alone. OGP suited me, the study days that I attended were in their offices in birmingham and I came from scotland. they hooked me up with another scots girl and we shared the accomadation, which made it a bit cheaper. then before you go to take the n-clex they like you to take a pre-flight test so that they know that you are prepared for the exam.

Hi guys a few days since I have been able to properly respond. Well I would just like to say that we are going on a home exchange holiday in July for one month, when we are there we hope to have a good look around and go to some hospitials we are going to California (Calsbad) near San deago.
I'm glad to hear Bettyboop that you have no regreats, I,m sure you have made the right decision and this is an oppertunity of a life time, we all have one life, I say live it. We would love to go to south California. where are you hoping to go?
I,m sorry to hear Silverdragan that your husband changed his mind, it was not ment to be, at least at the moment. My husband changes is mind every other day. depending on his mood. However we do agree that once we get back from holiday we ether go for it or we shut up about it. Thanks for the information on immigration. long wait?
Thanks English nurse on the advice on travelling, something to remember and plan for. How often do you have these study days? Well Christmas will be hear sooner that we think , only seven months to go, how's everything going. I,m sure you have made the right decision. what a journey you will have, all that exsperience. It's ment to be.
Midwife, your right, my mistake it was someone else that recommended another agencie. However thank you for recommending Cariad's journal to me to read. Is she a travell nurse? I hope thinks are improving for you of late. Have you got another job yet? after being fired, sounds like they did you a favour.
Anyway I,m off to the gym, give's me more energy and up lifts me for my night shifts, first of three starting tonight. All the staff are having to reapplie for their jobs, moral really low at the moment on the unit. But soon we will be moving to a new hospitial, state of the arts. That will cheer us all up, new start.
