one of the biggest hurdles is making sure your RN training matches requirements for the US. The next hurdle is going through CGFNS as they are sooooooooooooo slow and a pain when phoning them.

I am sure Sue, Kay and any of the others who have already made the transition will be able to tell you about the differences between nursing UK to US

Good Luck

Are you also thinking of relocating? I have been for a presentation with OGP and put of my first interview untill august because we are going to america for our summer holidays. We thought it best to wait untill we get back. We might not like it there be then again we may love it.

So far I have heared a lot of bad things regarding opd and now I am woundering if I should find another agency. Kay has recommended an alternative agency so I am now in the process of checking them out. The other question I would like to know is can you do it your self without involving an agency? and if so where do you start from?

regards:confused:

Jackie

you can do it yourself i am by no means an expert on that but im sure someone will post on here soon who knows abit more about it all

The thing you have to remember about agencies is that everyone has different experiances of the same agencies some good some bad, ogp have been in difficulties lately due to hold ups with processing, which may not be their fault, their communication during this hold up however could have been better!

i wouldnt write them off completely, just get all sides of the story before making up your mind, if you go it alone, you will have more choice about location and more control, you wont be tied in to a contract for a period of time, and no penalties to pay if the job doesnt work out.

I would imagine the key is to get a good immigration lawer, someone on here may recommend one for you

good luck and well done for considering the move, despite the bad press on here at the moment!

Thank you English nurse for your supporting comments. I was hoping to hear somthing good regarding ogp, I was fast loosing trust with them, as was my husband. I also feel it would be ones individual experience and some may be good and some not so good. This is just the begining of my journy and where it leads ?...................................................................

Hi do homework and loads of research before you decide to make the move, i originally was doing the work on my own but found the paper work heavy going, like English nurse i am with OGP and you really do have to have the patience of a saint and like English nurse said there communication is appalling regarding delays in processing etc also remember the exams you have to take NCLEX RN last year my family and i went through months of studying, and studying thankfully passed first time but it is a very stressful time.

I joined OGP July 2004 had a job offer in August 2004 and am still waiting for my first stage clearance (I-140) my departure has been delayed at least 12 months so you need a lot of support from family and friends. Your family has to be behind you 110%.

Saying all that i have never regretted taking the leap to move, but thanks to all the nurses on here i went in with eyes wide open. Look up Suzanne a moderator on hear she is very well schooled in the ins and outs regarding immigration and the pitfalls etc.

Good luck in your decision keep us informed.

PS were in the USA are you thinking of moving to?

Thank Anna

I was in the process of moving and with a few delays (over 18 months) my husband changed his mind. I would still go like a shot. Started process 3 years ago

One of the delays that is happening at the moment is changes within service centres who process immigration applications. This has really added more time on to peoples processing dates. You need to decide on where you want to live in the US and be prepared that the agencies can't guarentee that they can place you where you want to live. I was half doing it on my own with a recruiter which gave me more control on where we wanted to live

actually that is a very valid point with regards to study, ogp expect you to attend lectures, which as far as im aware take place at their london office, the lectures were quite useful but be aware that the costs for travelling to london you pay yourself, plus if you live in the north of england the travelling/time off work can be a pain in the rear!

all that said however im expecting to be in the usa for christmas, the hold up as said above has been due to slow processing of the i140, some people on here are still waiting who filed after me, betty boop being one of them.

good luck with what you decide, im not sure if we will regret our move or not but at least if it all goes wrong i can say at least i tried and did not let horror stories put me off.

if you give something your best effort then in my eyes it is not a failure.;)

Cariad is a person who came with OGP and had a good time-I was recommending you read her blog-I do not know any other agencies other than OGP and I do not advocat any agencies.

Nurses will come to the US anyway they can and that is their choice-I feel the experiences I have had with an agency are by no mean isolated to me, but at this stage I no longer feel I wish to discuss them with anybody on allnurses.

I wish everybody a safe journey and adventure, and I hope all goes well.

Thanks for your support to my questions. Its been nice to hear all your stories regarding relocation. I'm sure I will have many ups and downs along my journey. but I say it's better to try and fail than to never try at all.

thanks again gods

Hi guys a few days since I have been able to properly respond. Well I would just like to say that we are going on a home exchange holiday in July for one month, when we are there we hope to have a good look around and go to some hospitials we are going to California (Calsbad) near San deago.

I'm glad to hear Bettyboop that you have no regreats, I,m sure you have made the right decision and this is an oppertunity of a life time, we all have one life, I say live it. We would love to go to south California. where are you hoping to go?

I,m sorry to hear Silverdragan that your husband changed his mind, it was not ment to be, at least at the moment. My husband changes is mind every other day. depending on his mood. However we do agree that once we get back from holiday we ether go for it or we shut up about it. Thanks for the information on immigration. long wait?

Thanks English nurse on the advice on travelling, something to remember and plan for. How often do you have these study days? Well Christmas will be hear sooner that we think , only seven months to go, how's everything going. I,m sure you have made the right decision. what a journey you will have, all that exsperience. It's ment to be.

Midwife, your right, my mistake it was someone else that recommended another agencie. However thank you for recommending Cariad's journal to me to read. Is she a travell nurse? I hope thinks are improving for you of late. Have you got another job yet? after being fired, sounds like they did you a favour.

Anyway I,m off to the gym, give's me more energy and up lifts me for my night shifts, first of three starting tonight. All the staff are having to reapplie for their jobs, moral really low at the moment on the unit. But soon we will be moving to a new hospitial, state of the arts. That will cheer us all up, new start.
