Things you wish you knew when you were young?

Published

Hello everyone,

This sounds like an interesting thread. I will start. I wish I had more faith in myself and in my ability to be successful on my own. How about you?

That caring for yourself is just as important as taking care of everyone else...if you allow yourself get worn down to nothing-that's it! Anyone who does not have time for stress management: diet, exercise, yoga, etc REALLY, REALLY NEEDS IT.

Specializes in LTC, Hospice, Case Management.

I wish I would have taken the 4 year college remission deal our local private university offered due to my Mom being an employee for 10+ years..ie: free BSN degree. The catch was I had to do it right out of high school & I had to live with her for those four years. Didn't think it was worth it to put up with that.

Now I'm middle age & think God gave me the coolest Mom in the world!

Notes to self...

Everyone else does not read the entirety of World Book and Britannica for fun before starting kindergarten. Nor do they eagerly anticipate the arrival of the latest "Yearbook" addition to the sets.

Do not correct nuns. With or without rulers. Being lifted off the ground by your hair is painful.

Public schools suck more than private schools, and this is due more to a lack of appropriate discipline as opposed to draconian authority.

Your "Carbon molecules can form neat Soccer balls theory" is not incorrect because your 7th grade science teacher has inflexible conceptions of "bonding angles." And no, she "won't remember" four years later when some college student who just discovered it names it after Buckminster Fuller, instead of you.

Just because you know it, doesn't mean you should skate through on your test scores.

People are complex. Mensa members can do entirely stupid things, Mega Society members even more so.

Joining the Army to learn more about how people actually think does work better than philosophical discussion with others who have less of a clue than you do. (Don't waste time with Mensa and Mega.)

Don't marry her. She really is crazier than her mother. She will burn through your savings while you are gone.

Despite an IQ > literally everyone else, you too are still incredibly ignorant at times. Pay attention and work on comprehension beyond your normal scope of awareness.

investing in good nursing shoes is an investment in your future leg and foot health. Work hard at being a good team worker on the unit and promoting helping out other nurses when they are swamped. Good time management is essential to having a good shift, and the ability to prioritize is another essential skill. Take a look at the more experienced nurses that you work with, they have been doing the job long before you came around, and you can probably learn a few things from them. Just because you are the Charge Nurse doesn't mean that you must have all the answers, you can ask for help. You can have a good holiday at work, with your coworkers and patients and families.

Wish I had worked less overtime-truly not worth it-live on what you earn in 36-40 hours/week.......life is too short.

I wish I learned how to cook. Well.

That the best ways to obtain and maintain personal peace are to do the right thing, and appreciate what you have. That way you don't have to worry(about what you did that you shouldnt have, and what things you don't have that you want).

Im also irritated that it took me until my late 20,s to understand that the quickest way to bring happines to your life, is to bring a positive influence to others( you can't bring happiness to others, tried that, it NEVER works, they must do that for themselves). You can do a single good thing for someone that has a single positive outcome for somebody else. It's like free happy juice! You can feel good about that one all day! Now repeat.

We nurses have a thousand opportunities to make a difference in the lives a day(OK, maybe not a thousand, but certainly 3 or 4). How blessed are we? Wish i'd have learned that sooner.

I wish I'd learned how to sew when mum tried to teach me, I could have been sewing my own outfits now, lol.

I wish I'd stuck to my guns and convinced my Dad that I really wanted to continue with French as a major when I got my first degree.

And I wish I'd ignored the rude Navy recruiter and joined the Navy six years ago like I had wanted to. I'd still love the Navy and that dream is still alive so who knows...:nurse:

...that having a ******-off attitude, even if you have a really really really good reason to be ****** off, just makes people think you are a mean, negative, angry person.

...that the passion and love that exists in life is embedded in living and experiencing it -- the people, family, animals, nature. You don't have to go on a worldwide adventure to find what is worth living for.

...PR is everything. Present yourself the way you want to be seen and keep an eye out for haters. Stay away from them.

If I could go back 10 years, I would tell myself...

- don't do an arts degree, music leads to no where

- you are not fat!

- don't let your heart get trampled.

When you're drinking and tryin to see who can muddy up the 4-wheeler the most, and you hear your'buddy say "Check this out"...GET THE HELL OUTA THE WAY!

LMAO! I've been there ;)
