Stevielynn's thread about the nursing home with the signs on the food carts brings up (oops, no pun intended:D ) something that happened at work yesterday that turned even MY cast-iron stomach. I was the PRN helping with admits, and as I was charting vitals on one new pt., this lady came running up to me holding a patient gown literally dripping with fresh emesis and hollering that her mother was throwing up, and would I come quickly?

I followed her to the patient's room (even after she refused to give me the gown so I could deposit it in the linen barrel and NOT have a trail of slightly used vegetable soup running down the hall) and found a very confused elderly woman sitting up in bed, naked, with vomit EVERYWHERE--all over the bed, on the floor, even in her hair. Worse yet, she was just about to start eating again, apparently having already forgotten being sick, and seemingly unaware of the fact that she'd baptized the tray along with everything else!!

Well, it was all I could do to hang onto my own supper, and I had no choice but to deal with it alone because even the aides were too busy with vitals on the fresh post-ops we'd just gotten. Half an hour later I emerged from the room, smelling ghastly and feeling somewhat under the weather, but by gosh that little lady was nice and clean and her daughter pleased as punch with the service. At least I got a thank-you out of it.....but I hope I don't have to deal with anything like that again any time soon.

sorry so late with my reply. the guy that had the moldy underwear was living at home. ....with his mother.......he was about 50 or so..................and i dont think anyone explained to him the boundaries of a mother/son relationship, cuz they were a little too close if you get my drift.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwww

On MANY levels!

Din't his mommy teach him to change his underwears?

Well............what happened is the squad was called to their house because mom was on the floor and couldent get up. She was covered in ......shall we say...........body waste. and they saw that the son was no better.........drunk (his normal state of mind.) and unable to care for himself, let alone someone else. Spends her ss check on booze, forges checks, has cleaned out her bank account on more than one occasion, etc. etc.

I'm not too fond of the sight and sound of oral or nasal suctioning! But the worst thing by far I have ever UNEXPECTEDLY encountered was the uncared for wound of a street person. He was a new pt and we cleaned him up. He was definitely ripe and had to be de-loused. I cleaned up his various wounds etc. One wound on his ankle was older and partially scabbed and when I cleansed it with saline a few MAGGOTS were visible deeper inside the wound. How gross!!!! It seems some flies had laid their eggs in this wound and the maggots were feeding on the exudate. I didn't lose my lunch but I did have the creeps for quite a while!

I've smelled some strange and unusual odors over the years like ya'll.

Last night we got a transfer in...we could smell him coming down the ICU hallways and it permeated the air...swore he had defecated some foul BM...searched the bedclothes...nada...

Guess what? It was his breathe...an empyema. The odor is through the entire unit...:o

We had a 28 year old male into the unit who had been found down under a porch. He had overdosed. Anyhow, while putting in an NG tube one of my coworkers noticed a strange looking substance come from his nose. Then a little more. Small and white... then they started moving........ yep...... the man had maggots in his NOSE!!!!!!

This one got my attention. That is horrific. Wounds is one thing, they can even be considered helpful, but in the nose. EEWWW!
