Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

How about to the patient I picked up mid shift because she had already fired 2 nurses (and a doctor) that day:

1. NO, I will not give your prn med anytime you want them. Yes I know that they are "as needed", but not every half hour. Would you take a couple of tylenol every 5 mins at home? I know you aren't too bright, but how many times do you need this concept explained to you?

2. NO, I will not give your IV dilaudid, oxycontin, phenergan, and soma to you at the same time. Do you want to keep breathing? Oh you want your ambien too. Yeah right.

3. I understand that the mattress is uncomfortable, but that's because you are morbidly obese. We do not have eggcrates, I know this because I spent half and hour trying to find one, so deal with it.

4. NO, we will not order you an expensive "special mattress", they are for people who need it, your insurance will not pay for it and since you are "disabled" you won't be able to pay for it. Being obnoxious and overweight does not qualify you. Sorry!

5. NO we will not take your (also morbidly obese) mother two buildings away for md appointment, this is her responsiblity, we need our staff and equipment HERE.

6. Sure I'll get the nursing supervisor and charge nurse in to talk to you about your mattress. Again. I'm sure they have nothing else to do.

I answered your call light and rinsed the poop out of your commode. Just because I did it with a smile on my face does not mean I was flirting with you! Your inappropriate behavior does not impress me. So just shut up.

Actually I totally could have gotten away with all of that, except the last sentence. But I have no backbone. So I just said, "I smile at everybody. Aren't all the employees around here nice?" and left it at that.

"No I will not wipe you after you go to the bathroom. You're 57 years old & live at home alone, who going to wipe you there when you get home later today?"

We had a 44 year old 380+ lb. woman who asked us to wipe her every time she pooped all over herself or all over the floor on the way to the bathroom (and had the nerve to ask if we had wiped her well enough). One of the nurses asked her who did it for her at home. She replied, "My husband or my son." HER SON IS 12 YEARS OLD!!! SHAME ON HER!!!

:angryfire

Talk about child abuse.

We spoke with a SW about it, and we were told that there wasn't enough proof of abuse.

The Bible tells us not to look on our mother's nakedness. If the son were 40 and his infirm mom were 65, it would be different. But for a 12 y/o son to be expected to is endangering the future sex life of this child....not to mention the therapy he'll need.

:banghead:

do the "end run" around the SW......and the father is no better for allowing it......report it,.....where is this going when kid gets to be a teenager? "no, guys cant go hang out, gotta stay home and whip my mothers butt"?

crude statement, but ???

Now unless I had a freak accident while traveling, I wouldn't sit in a hospital in France and keep talking in English because they wouldn't understand me now would they?

Actually, my brother's girlfriend was traveling in France when she did have a freak accident. When she came to, she started talking to the paramedics in French. :D

To me, there is abuse there. Maybe you can talk to the SW's supervisor. That is just messed up on so many levels.

If it was a 12 year old girl having to wipe her fathers butt, I'm sure there would be a HUGE outcry. (This is a point that should be brought up to them.)

Quit telling your OCD PITA daughter that you are in pain every ten minutes then have her come screaming and shouting at the nurses station for me. That means I have to trump down to your room for you to tell me you're not really in pain and you refuse a pain pill. You banned your other psycho daughter from visiting you. I have news for you - this one is just as crazy and your parenting skills weren't up to much.
