i am starting nursing school in september...and as far as what i will encounter, i'd say not too much makes me squeemish. blood, puke, defecation....doesnt bother me. open wounds, dead bodies, surgery....interests me. the one thing that makes me squeemish and i'm not sure how i'm going to handle once i see it in person is really weird.
the idea of putting a tournaquet on and seeing the veins pop out, and poking and prodding them...that makes me sick to my stomach. when i get blood drawn...i absolutely hate it...not because of the needle or blood....but the tournaquet. i cant even look at it, and the idea of it makes me sick. i dont know why...it seems weird. i guess the only way to overcome it is to force myself to do it when im in school...facing your fears i guess...
what are some things you have to do day to day that gross you out?
I'm not a nurse and don't start nursing school until next month. But I am a CNA and when I worked in LTC I took care of a a man whose whole back was covered in bed soars that were just horrible. It gave off this smell that I just couldn't describe. I can handle the smell of bm, vomit, urine etc but for some reason I never got used to the smell of that mans bed soars. First time something had ever made me gag.
I'm beginning nursing school next month, too. I don't have a clinical background, but I have been working in long term care for the past 7 years. BEFORE reading this thread, I thought the only things that would gross me out were bones being in the wrong place and anything to do with eyes and noses. AFTER reading this thread, my new list is so long that I'm wondering what in the heck I'm getting ready to put myself through!!!! :)
Wound care on stage 4 pressure ulcers where bones and muscle are visible, where there's smelly exudate and dead tissue, and where there's deep tunneling that requires packing. The sights and smells are too much for me and I literally get nauseous and start to gag. Thankfully, this task is NOT a part of my daily routine, and I've only rarely had to see such horrific wounds. There's definitely no way I could ever be a wound care nurse, though!
omg i took care of a toddler that knew how to pop his prosthetic eye out just to gross us out haha. i jyst about passed out the first time he did it to me. that and decanulating...grrr. gets me every time!!
a family friend lost his eye in the viet nam war and later married and had kids. one day when he had just
showered and was in the process of cleaning his prosthetic eye, his three year old son opened the door and
wandered in. instead of being scared or grossed out, he was absolutely fascinated!
the friend thought quickly and said that some people just had removable parts. grandma's teeth came out,
uncle __'s hair slept in a box at night, aunt ___'s foot came off, __ wore glasses so she'd see better,
aunt __ wore a hearing aid in her ear for the same reason.
for about six months, every time he saw someone, he'd immediately ask them "what part of you comes off
at bedtime?":rotfl:
