They come out of the woodwork

Published

The other night working on a patients, I was absorbed doing what I was supposed to be doing. When a coworker saw a pts family member pick my wallet right out of my pocket.

I had that family member removed from the ER. And for her not to be let back in. even though the pt and other family members asked that she should be allowed in. Not one of them apologized for that persons behaviour. Then they said they were going to complain that I kept that person out.

My sentiment was, too Bad.

It is rampant everywhere. The other night I had a drunk sixteen year old I was trying to discharge take a swing at me and out of instinct I grabbed his arm in an attempt to block the punch and held his arm. Well when the family started to get in the middle of it they were asked to leave by security. WEll apparently this was too much for them and the next thing I know I am explaining myself to 3 sheriff deputies. Nothing came of the incident and the next day when the mother called my boss she said the pt did not even remember the whole incident. It frustrated me to no end that they come to you for help and then blind side you for helping. Yeah well the life of the ED nurse I guess.[EVIL]:angryfire[/EVIL]

I might have kicked it up a notch and called the cops, sent the jerk to jail for a few hours. Wonder how the fam would have behaved then.

:angryfire

Dang, Tom! You can't turn your back on the family, now! I know you can't turn your back on the patients (no telling what they would do), but that is absolutely the first time I heard anything like that.:nono:

When I read stories like this, I wonder how in God's green earth do you ED nurses deal with what you deal with! How do you continue to get up and go to work each day? But then again, we also get a lot of the rif raf sent up to us on the floors too - misery!

I am just so sick of the lack of accountability of these folks. And yet we nurses are held accountable if the patient and/or family members are dissatified because we did not fetch their coffee in a timly manner!

I wish that every single nurse (agency/travel included) working at a hospital in this country would strike just for one day. And let the managers and admin (former practicing nurses) do this job - just for one day!!!!

It would be interesting to see, but it would never happen. I think they'd probably close the hospitals first! Those admin folks might be concerned about losing their licenses....

Oh, how I would love it if managers could do our job, for just ONE 8 hour shift! I would LOVE to watch that!

To the OP, sorry about your incident, it is so unnerving and offensive to be stolen from. And for them to steal from the very people who are helping their loved ones get better!!!! THE NERVE!!!!! :angryfire

P.S.....wonder if there is script we're supposed to use when a family member steals from us..... :)

Dude! That just plain sucks! No wonder you said in another post that you didn't want to bring your golf clubs to work. What if they took your wallet AND your clubs?

So, did you give the family the name and phone # of your manager? As in:

Pt: "I'm gonna complain!"

Tom:"Let me get a piece of paper. Here is the name of the person you need to call and their phone #. They are usually in the office by 0900."

I am really sorry that happened.

Now Tom you know the right thing to do would have been to take up a collection of the other nurses' wallets so this poor distraught family member wouldn't have to do it himself.

There ya go ... instead of " ... I have the time" we could say, "of course you can have my wallet, I have the money." :rotfl:
