These docs are gonna fight!

My patient....

Today the surgeon tells my patient that he will perform surgery tomorrow.

The other doc (primary) told this patient that if this doc does the surgery that he will not come out of the surgery alive. This surgeon will be livid when doing rounds this evening and the patient corners him.

Same primary doc...

Tells us nurses today that his patient could NOT leave AMA, that we should have restrained him and called the cops! :omy: Hmm, exactly what would we tell the cops doc?!

DOC vs DOC :argue::smiley_ab:chair:

Its gonna get interesting.

no they won't, they'll make sure nursing is the middleman and will likely never communicate with eachother....head that off at the pass right quicklike

The poor nurses?! How about that poor patient!!!?? Here they are ready to take their doctors advice and go into surgery and another doctor comes up and tells them they will die if they do. Seems very unprofessional to me. The doctors should have conversed with one another before giving any patient that kind of news!!

There was a case I knew of some years ago in AZ where one doc took out a contract on another doc. (No joke!)

That was on Dateline or something, I remember seeing it.

That primary doc is a doofus. Better try to stay out of the way and CYA. I would love to hear the updates on this.

This is about as unprofessional as it gets. Did you bring this to your supervisor's attention?! I would ASAP.

After the primary doc said that you should restrain the patient and not allow the patient to sign out AMA, then I'd have to question his judgement regarding the surgeon and surgery. In this case, the patient might want another PCP, IMO. (I know these weren't the same patients, but still!)

Are you KIDDING me? CYA?

Jeez, I may be new here, and you may be a senior member, but a nurse is an ADVOCATE.

Not a person looking to CYA. Please.

Anybody working front line med surg. who wants cya job just needs to go find a nice nursing home or insurance job.

If ever a patient needed somebody to help, this is it. Why become a nurse? To cower because 2 docs are gonna battle.

A stupid doc needs to be stopped or taught. Too bad you don't think so.

If I was there, and could make a clear definition as to which the right way to go would be, you could be sure I'd say so to the patient and the family.

Sleeping at night and doing the right thing go hand in hand.

I love this quote.

I just meant she should do documentation while she is advocating for the patient, and try to avoid the docs attempts at blaming the nursing staff. I guess I didn't post clearly. My idea of CYA is to make it hard for anyone to retaliate against job or license because of standing up against bad practice. I've heard of management doing that when nurses report unsafe conditions or abuse.

Actually, I believe the PCP is wrong about this. IF the patient is oriented, and proved to be fully competent to make his own decisions, he IS allowed to sign himself out AMA..... :twocents:

Wow, that's crazy.I would tell my manager, give her the scoop and call it a day. That is where your responsibility ends.Unless the pt is confused or a 72 hour detention, there is no way you can refuse him to sign out AMA or restrain him. But, do please carry you cam corder with you to work every day..Just in case :):chuckle

I think it would be in the patient's best interest to quietly slip away (go AMA in the middle of the night) and find a whole new set of docs and a different hospital. Then, when the doc has his temper tantrum over the patient leaving, he should be restrained & the cops called on him. Let's see how much he would like it done to him.
