My trusty thermometer has fizzled out and I need to find a replacement. Unfortunately, the one I use now is a discontinued item, so I have to start fresh. What do you use or what do you wish you had to use?

Thanks for the great memory of my Dad! He had a jar of mercury on his desk and occasionally would let us play with it. Oh, that was fun! I had forgotten about that. :geek:

I think now it would be a HazMat response!!!

I swear the vast majority of my students had no idea that you could take a temperature orally. When I first started here I had no idea where anything was kept and could only find oral thermometers. I used them for the first several weeks and every kid gave me a weird look when I told them to put it under their tongues! Seriously, maybe one actually knew how/where to keep it without my explaining.

I know! I have 6th-8th graders and I had to make a poster on WHERE an oral thermometer goes.. I don't know how many times I've said "nope, close your lips like it's a straw" 🙄

My facilities director confiscated every single one (well maybe almost all of them :bag:), due to risk of mercury hazard. Remember when we were kids we used to chase the mercury around on the floor when it broke?

Oh yes. It was quite entertaining.

Holy cow, some got spilled last year in one of the science rooms. You would have thought it was a national emergency. Guys in Hazmat suits came from miles away, evacuated the kids from that hall. (We really just wanted to clean it up quick, no harm/no foul. but, was afraid we'd end up on Facebook over it)

On Topic- I am replacing my ancient Braun Thermoscan (ear) Thermometer. I see the newest version has been discontinued. The newest version is the Welch Allyn/Braun ThermoScan 6000 Professional Thermometer.

Has anyone used this model? I am scared to spend that much money without knowing its ok. Anyone know about it?

dang, i didn't even notice that. I hope when i did my budget i didn't order the wrong probe covers. I want the ones for the 4000. It looks like the school health catalogue doesn't show a number. I am guessing if i were to check the website that they have them and that i purchased the right thing - but we shall see

The catalog I looked in. I think it was MacGill. Showed to be 2 different probe covers for the 2 models. But, the ones for the 4000 are available from them.

The school system iWork for uses temp-a-dots, but aren't very reliable for the wee ones that can't understand how to hold it under their tongue. :bored:
