I was looking up more news for Jahi & came across this. It's happening in a city close to me. I'm amazed Jahi's mom hasn't jumped on this family's boat yet.

I'm not all that familiar with this story; however, it appears he, too, has been transported to NJ. NJ's vehicle tags will soon be changed from "The Garden State" to "Home of the Brain Dead".

Wow, this is just getting ridiculous. So are Jahi & him sharing a room?

So now any family who doesn't want to accept brain death as death can just bring their family member to New Jersey, huh?

Oops . . . that definitely sounded insulting to those from NJ. Perhaps I should've suggested "Last chance for the brain dead" instead of "home of". Quite sorry:(

Well the governor earns that title especially with his current thoughts against mandatory vaccination.

The other child was never tested or declared brain death. The initial tests were showing negative for brain death as he has purposeful movement & verifiable reflexes from objective observers. The controversy started, from what I've read, was discussion of a vent wean/apnea test. The team from LifeNews (the alleged catholic neonatologist Dr Byrne who vehemently opposes the concept of brain death) convinced the family that the apnea test is fatal and would hasten death rather than prove life.

He was never declared brain dead and was showing signs of recovery from excessive cerebral edema after a near fatal asthma attack.

NJ haven to the brain dead. The NJ legislature focuses on some stupid laws/bills such as exactly which bug should be the state insect. The state animal is a horse but lately it seems they should have named the horse's ass with this trend of boarding the brain dead. NJ is supposed to be getting another band of snow that perhaps can be used to preserve the influx of living dead.

Thanks, JustBeachy . . .

I couldn't tell if he was or was not ever declared brain dead. When I reviewed the articles I could find, I see that the ONLY reports of his being declared brain dead were published by religious or right-to-life publications who, of course, would love to twist this to fit their agenda!

Also, couldn't help but wonder where the hairdresser was when the family was looking for hospitals. Guess not enough publicity in this for her.

Don't forget ..he also supported mandatory isolation isolation in a tent for asymptomatic nurse Kaci Hickox..."a very sick woman." :cautious:

Yeah he has a "wonderful" track record of medical "mandates". Let's isolate a low risk licensed professional but your kids don't really need to be vaccinated against measles or pertussis diseases that are becoming prevalent in the area with high rusk of morbidity and mortality. But EBOLA is scarier especially if asymptomatic and tested negative. (Sarcasm)

Probably need to just quarantine the whole state of NJ before the zombie outbreak since it has become a haven for somatic support of brain dead bodies when the parents have a religion of convenience.

Aw, what a tragedy :(

I'm looking through the various articles as well. Joey Cronin's case has been picked up, so to speak, by the right-to-life folks and a couple of pro-life type organizations, after Joey's mom filed for a restraining order to prevent the medical staff from performing imaging to determine what the state of blood circulation was in Joey's brain. According to this article, a doctor who is not named expressed concerns to the parents that Joey's brain was still swollen and the results of the imaging test would probably lead to a diagnosis of brain death (or as close to it as it gets). Thus, the parent's filed a restraining order to prevent the testing being done at all.

According to the same article linked above, Joey descended into a coma some days after he was hospitalized. Prior to that he was 'grabbing hands' and showing response to external stimulation, but then stopped even doing that. Interesting how the writer of this article says "they put him on a ventilator to help him breath but did not put in a feeding tube", as if 'normally' the two go together (which we know they don't).

Then suddenly, Joey is in New Jersey according to the blog linked in FLAlleycat's post. Once the right-to-life organizations got involved, Joey goes to New Jersey.

I wonder if that unnamed doctor who cautioned the family about the likely results of the blood flow imaging is from one of these right-to-life organizations that got involved? I don't think NOT giving the name of the doc, or even referring to his place on the treatment team is not an 'oversight', if you know what I mean.

So there's been no formal 'brain death' testing AFTER Joey descended into a full-on coma several days after his admission. Joey is not brain dead, legally and formally. As a secular person I sure dislike seeing a political agenda hoist up poor Joey as their latest poster child for 'how doctors just want to hurry up and call 'em brain dead for whatever conspiracy-speak reason'. Joey is just in New Jersey where it doesn't matter if he's brain dead or not. Be wary of the 'spin' put on this issue. It's pretty darn easy to see what the spin IS by the websites and blogs promoting it. There's a lot of grey area here, and most importantly there's a young boy and his parents who must be shattered. I am so sorry for what they are all going through, and could give a **** about the opportunists using Joey's condition for their cause. To me, that is an example of human evil, though on the lite side. Joey is not a poster child and his parents are going through the worst thing parents can go through. Can anyone speak to THAT without being bashed by one political agenda or another?

I wish they would've let the swelling go down & then do the test. I hate that the pro lifers jumped all over him & they moved him to New Jersey. There should be no reason to move him away from his family. I know they didn't test him but they should have.

I can't imagine the pain they are in but they need to do what is right for their child. I would want to know if my child were brain dead or not.

The one report I saw stated he had purposeful movement, pupillary response and when sedation backed off was breathing over the vent so was in a deep coma and not brain death. IMHO this anti-brain death group jumped the gun and was creating unnecessary fear in a fragile family. It sounds like the child did not meet the criteria for a brain death examination which would have been found once the pre-assessment was complete. My father failed the brain death assessment simply by having spontaneous respirations during the pre-assessment and maintaining SpO2 when sedation was backed off and vent settings changed to allow for patient effort.

Once I saw Byrne attach himself to the family I knew it was all over for them if the boy was declared brain dead or not.

It's just a shame, the family should've been left alone to make their own decisions for their child.

And if the reports are accurate he would have been declared in a coma, not brain dead, and as a child the family would've been given hope for recovery in a pediatric rehab setting. Instead of fearing the unrealistic potential outcome and developing a gross mistrust for the medical and healthcare professionals. Shame on Byrne for preying on a distressed vulnerable family! And he totes ethics as one of his specialties? I think this proves otherwise!
