The Spring '05 Anatomy & Physiology Club: A&P 2

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi all! Just thought I'd go ahead and start this. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas (or whatever you celebrate!) I'm very much enjoying my family time right now.

Spring semester starts January 5th for me, and I'll be taking A&P 2 and College Algebra. Hope to see lots of you posting here like last semester :)

We had lecture today, finishing up the endocrine system, specifically, diabetes, which I know alot about as I'm a type 1 diabetic.

I was appalled at the mis-information the prof was giving the class. That Type 2's are *always* managed with diet and exercise (I know many on insulin, and even MORE on oral meds) and that it is dangerous to manage them with meds (huh???). Type 2's secrete enough insulin, but don't use it properly (not true according to my endo - Type 2's can either not secrete enough, secrete enough but not be able to get it into cells properly, or a combination of the two). My personal favorite was that type 1's don't know why they get the disease. Really? We know it's an auto-immune disorder, where they body attacks the beta cells in the pancreas. Now, yes, we don't know WHY that happens, but she made it sound as if we just wake up with it one morning. She also perpetuated the myth that you can become diabetic by eating sugar too much. I can't tell you how many times I've been told that if I'd not eaten so much sugar, I wouldn't be diabetic (and I've only been diabetic for 7 years!! LOL)

I did not correct her. I heard from two students who had her over the summer that she's a great professor, but does NOT take kindly to being told she's wrong or has the wrong info on something. I'll just bide my time, biting my tongue!

I have my first exam on the spinal reflexes, brain, and nerves on friday and it seems like way too much to remember! wish me luck! by the way, I'm Angel, a soph. in undergrad.

Best of luck! It is a lot to remember. I found if I apply it to myself, all the parts and stuff, it was easier to remember.

We just had our lab on the endocrine system tonight...it doesn't sound like too much to learn for the practical for that sys. anyway. We are doing the reproductive sys. in lecture and will have our first lecture test next week. Best wishes everyone !

Specializes in Hey I'm now an RN!!.

 Does your lab instructor show you what you are suppossed to be looking for on cadavers and slides or do they say get your lab manual and dig in...

My instructor does not teach...We look for things ourselves and ask questions if we have too.

:chair: This is very different than my A&P1, 5 years ago...Our instructor showed us what the deal was and then let us loose to find it on our own, questions and discussion always permittable.

He's a nice enough guy but I think I am missing something here...

I am starting to quake in my shoes!!

We're in a little different section than the rest of you! We're going over articulations and the bones of the skeleton. Test next Wednesday!

We're doing blood now, and spent our entire lab looking/analyzing our own blood. So yes, our instructor does, but we don't do any actual dissection in this lab until the end, and then it's a fetal pig. I think last semester they did much more dissection (I didn't take A&P1 at this school), but still on fetal pigs. I actually would prefer a human, but being a Catholic college, I know that won't happen.

I've heard some lab instructors are NOT very hands-on, and by A&P2, figure students should know how to figure stuff out. We have a lot of students NOT participate in lab - just show up for the weekly quiz, then leave. I don't get how they'll learn that way, but whatever - it's not my grade!

Specializes in NICU.

Our lab instructors go over the lab instructions and then we're on our own. She floats around answering questions and such, but mostly letting us work on our own. Near the end of lab, we all get together and she goes over EVERYTHING to be sure of our comprehension. I really like it - it works well :)

I love my TIVO! It got me through my first semester of nursing school. I did have to cut back on the programs that I had subscriptions to (I was glad when Friends went off the air, and I don't like the CSI:New York), but I do find it lets me catch up on all my "cop" type shows on the weekend! :)

Good luck on your exam! My first is Monday, but we have a quiz each Thursday in lab.

I've been struggling with those also. I finally just did a big "tree" of all the endocrine organs and what they secrete and what other organ they may affect. Too big for one page, so one page per organ. I kept re-writing it until I could do it in my sleep - almost! Then when we had our quiz last week, and she gave us a chart to fill in, I knew it. I was thrilled!

The are some mnemonics for some of the hormones, but I only found a few, and they didn't "make sense" like some do, so I didn't use them. Writing and re-writing works best for me.

Good Luck! Our exam on Monday is endocrine and blood, but we have a quiz each Thursday in lab.
