The "I hate math" club

Published

I am starting my stats class on the 29 my very last math course I will ever have to take!

Math is my worst subject. I can never get anything over a 'B'. I was thinking that if there was any others in here taking stats and dreading it we could help eachother out when we get stuck or just have some one to gripe to! :roll

Whether or not you like math, it is an important skill for a nurse to be exposed to. While you may never do research, or participate in statistical analysis outside of your stats class, it is important to begin thinking in terms of evidence and practice. Stats show direct and indirect correlations between actions and results. ALL of nursing practice is about actions and results. Are you going to perform an action that is not shown to provide benefit to the pt? Stats will show benefits and downfalls of the actions we take.

On a side note with relation to stats, nurses are constantly hoping for a higher level of respect and stature in the HC field. One of the ways of achieving this is to back up our practice with NURSING research. Utilzing the skills we learn in stats to find better ways to care for our patients will do lightyears of difference in boosting the reputation of nursing as a profession.

In addition to stats, you will always be doing math as a nurse. Once you begin your nursing courses, you will most likely be required to pass a drug calculations exam with a 90% or higher. This is important enough to be a requirement for clinicals, and you do in fact need to know this skill in order to administer medication safely and appropriately.

If math is a struggle for you, seek assistance NOW. Don't wait until you have only one more chance to pass before you get some help. More than a few nursing students have been released from programs for failure of math and calculations exams, not to mention the fact that even if you pass, and don't understand what you are doing, you can seriously harm someone.

Well, I'll end up taking stats, but not until I become an RN and do the RN-BSN route.

I'm gonna suffer through Chem for that reason now. It has enough errrr too much math as it is.

Yes, I HATE MATH! lol :)

Good luck!

You'll love my semester Fun2. Algegra, Stats and Chemistry. I'm taking algebra online. You should have seen me argue with them about taking algebra. When I started college, I took 2 semesters of calculus.....they just don't care.

Not to be pessimistic, but I just finished stats and I hated it. Not that it is all that difficult, it is just a very boring class. My professor had a monotonous voice, and our 50 minute lecture sometimes felt like hours. Good Luck to you all, and I hope that your professors actually put some fun in your lectures :)

By definition, statistics ARE boring. I've been doing statistical generation and analysis for Statistical Process Control in an engineering enviornment for the past 10 years or so....fun DON'T enter in to it..but it is a necessary evil.

Just remember that Excel is the statistician's best friend.

UGGGH! Good luck! I'm not that brave! So far, since I have returned to school for nursing, I have completed all of my classes (except A&P 1) as a fast-track, maymester, winter-mester, or summer course. However, I stratigically placed these so I would only have 1 or at most 2 classes at a time since last November. I don't think I could handle chem, stats & algebra together.....BRAIN DRAIN!!!! lol

Summer 1 2004 - A&P 1 while working full time as an engineer

Fall 2004 - A&P 2 with the same job

Spring 2005 - Microbiology...new job..commuting from Dallas to Houston as an engineering manager. Down there on Sunday, drive back for Tues. nite class. Work out of the house Wed & Thur. Fly to (7:00 AM Flight) Houston and back (9:00 PM flight) on Friday.

Summer 1 & 2 - Engl. 1301 online...bridges both sessions

Summer 2 - Intro Psych.

Grade points average? 4.0 with a perfect score in the English class. OK...so I got lucky on that one.

I got laid off at the end of June so I figured that going to school Mon - Thur nites...one class per nite with an online algebra class wouldn't hurt me any.

We'll see if I still have a 4.0 come December.

I have taken Statistics before. I wasn't too happy with taking it because I usually do really bad at math but I had a good teacher so that helped. I'll be happy to help if I can and if you want. :)

Thanks lalajenn...but after looking through the book this week, I think I could probably teach this class.

I've been doing calculus based stats as part of my job for a number of years. This arithmetic based stuff is pretty basic. I'm sure I'll end up with an A in this one. :lol2:

I'm not crazy about math but will be starting Stats September 23. Count me in!

Half of his brain would make me a genius. LOL

Keep up the good work, Mike! :)

Hey..I'm here to help you guys too. I've had the same two lab partners through most of these classes. I'm about to help one of them through algebra and the other through stats.

Don't hesitate to ask.

Mike
