The Oprah Show (NICU related)

Published

Did anyone watch yesterday's Oprah show? It was the show which had Celine Dion and Anne Geddes as guests, and talked about miracle babies. Anyways, in one part, they talked about this one mother with lupus who gave birth to a baby via c-section at 27 weeks. Due to the mother's lupus, the baby was born really small and in grave condition. Weighed less than a pound and was given less than 10 percent chance of survival. Well the baby beat the odds and survived. Baby was brought onto the set of the Oprah show at 9 months of age. Was the size of a regular newborn baby and the developmental level of a 5 month old. But the parents mentioned the baby was on track and would catch up by the age of 2. Don't you just love these success stories? When I watched the show and heard this story, it really warmed my heart. Such a miracle baby.

Good for them, but I don't really like to see it on TV. The public thinks that babies are OK when they are born at that age, and misses the

I also saw on yahoo a man who came out of a coma after 20 years...I hate those stories. Someday someone in my family will hook me to a Gtube just waiting for the miracle because it COULD happen. No thanks.

I totally agree. I mean yeah it's great that the baby is doing so well, that's truly amazing. But why doesn't Oprah have one of the chronic babies on her show? The ones that have a trach, a g-tube, head bleeds, etc., etc., etc. Those are a lot more common than the 27 week miracle baby.

Yeah I know it's because no one wants to see the sad stuff, everyone wants to see the miracles that beat the odds. But you're right when you say it gives the public false hope and then when we get a 23-24 weeker, the parents want EVERYTHING done because "their baby will be a miracle".

It's so sad.

And the "But my friend's sister's cousin saw on TV that a baby could survive and be perfectly fine at 21 weeks!" It's like a game of telephone.

I did see the Oprah thing, but I had to keep flipping away because Celine Dion gives me the wiggins.

About Oprah....

She has never done a show on nurses!!! I think she should havwe some NICU nurses on her "favorite things" show. We have all been emailing her at work but no response. Come on Oprah!!! We work as hard as teachers and no summers/ holidays off!!!

I believe that Echo Heron has been on Oprah, but that would have been a long time ago already, maybe almost 20 years.

You have a really good point there though... :)
