Just a bit ago the top three threads involved:
1.I have a DWI. Can I be a nurse?
2.I am stupid. Can I be a nurse?
3.If it takes me five times to pass NCLEX, Can I be nurse.
Not much left to add. Says it all.
I really don't understand why a positive drug test is a big deal. I was on vacation and I was SURE that the little bit of THC would be out of my system. Can you believe I have been a nurse for years and NEVER had a random test? Can you BELIEVE they FIRED ME? I mean I had a PRESCRIPTION for the benzo's, soma's, and oxy's I take everyday. Nevermind the fact I get them from four different MD's, they are all PRESCRIPTION right? I only use the EXTRA my patients don't need. Now, they have reported me to the BON? I have to be away from my family? They think I am an ADDICT? It must be because I am skinny and smarter. And I walked 100 miles in the snow to take my written NCLEX. Well, maybe in my next job I won't have to clean poop, puke or talk to MD's.
Here's a real one for ya from a couple of years ago....
So, we had a forecast for 5 inches of snow, you didn't call anyone and tell them they could stay over for the following dayshift, and turned down volunteers who said they could to come in and overnight to make sure you had a full dayshift headcount. Now you're calling trying to find help, after the roads are closed and nobody can get it?
Followed by: "They're so mean! I live three doors down from the hospital and they sent the hospital's security 4 wheeler to get me. I thought I was getting a snow day! Why didn't they go get the people who lived 30 miles away?"
Guess those patients were just going to be on auto pilot...

No way! These two posts are real?
I just read this whole thread. Love it. I wish these idiotic things that people say were an exaggeration, but alas, I know they're not. A couple from my real life:- ran into someone I took a pre-nursing class with (I'm in an ADN program now) and she says that she started nursing school at another area college (a BSN program) and hated it but still wants to be a nurse so "my adviser put me in the classes I need so I can be an office nurse after I graduate, something where I don't have to take care of patients." On further questioning about what she actually wants to do she says "I don't know, my adviser just set it all up."
- overheard in the gym:
Woman #1: I'm in school to be a nurse.
Woman #2: I have a friend who's a nurse and all she does is sit on the internet all day and she makes SO much money!
Woman #3: I know! It will be great.
later in the locker room, woman #1 notices my uniform and asks if I'm in nursing school. She says she wants to do a 4-year BSN program but says she wants to apply to my program. We proceeded to have a confusing, circular conversation in which it became clear that she has no idea what she has to do to become a nurse. She just wants to sit on the internet all day and get paid for it. Inset head banging into brick wall here.
She can come here and offer lots of unsolicited "I'm not a nurse yet but..." advise. (sic)
Well, I'm not going to be offering any advice/encouragement to any more "wannabes." There was yet another thread about someone wanting to know if it was a good idea to go into nursing, even though she has student loans she hasn't paid off and has a stable job she likes. People advised against it for the most part, myself included. She lashed out and bashed the people who took the time and trouble to reply. And that's when I thought, "Go ahead. Do whatever you want. I'm out."
why do people ask for advice then lash out, bash and disrespect everyone who gives advice they disagree with?
i just want support! never mind that my expectations are completely unrealistic. you all are just so old and mean and don't want to help us young beautiful pre-pre-pre-pre nursing students who already know everything that can possibly be known! if i wanted to read your opinion, i'd give it to you!

Of the many things that life has taught me is that, usually, when people ask for advice, it's not advice they seek, rather it's confirmation. This is especially true on anonymous internet boards. Nobody wants to be told that they are making a mistake-lots of pride involved. They get those rose colored glasses locked firmly in place and they're loath to remove them.
I've found this true with my son. If he is really looking for my advice I just lay out the facts, good and bad, and try to structure it so he believes the correct(in my opinion) decision is his idea.
But, as history has demonstrated, no matter the outcome of others' actions we will always find a reason to discount their experience and repeat the same mistakes ourselves. After all, we believe we are smarter than those with the experience.
