The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

They probably won't consider mine, cause I just realized that the school didn't put a seal on the letter of acceptence. Do you think this will be a problem?

Who knows. I was just re-reading the FAQ, and according to that you can't be in a bridge program to apply. Which doesn't matter to me because I'm not, but for those of you who are you may want to look into that.

I am praying that I get this scholarship! If anyone hears anything please post it on here! While we are waiting, where's everyone from and what school do you go to? I'm from the bay area and I'll be starting the 2+2 BSN program at Samuel Merritt University in the fall.

I'm in new Mexico and going to apollo's 2 yr adn program!! Good luck to you all!!!

I am from TX and I am in adn program at Baptist School of Health professions

Hey I'm from Lakeland, FL I'm in the Adn program at Concorde in Tampa.

I wasn't qualified last year, but I finally am this year! It sucks that it's based on your EFC - I'm in school full-time, working full-time, and trying to support my wife and 3 kids. Last year we were told no b/c I was working too much. Thank goodness - my school schedule has required me to cut back my hours, and now we're eligible!

Does anyone know - do most of the people in the first priority funding group get money, or is it still competitive there like based on your essays or whatever?

There's usually way more people who apply than those who get funding. I got the scholarship in 2006. I don't think the rules have changed substantially if at all, but at that time, no one in other groups got funding until all of the EFC 0 group was funded.

im a bit confused on how they require you to work at a clinic, hospital, etc that have a critical shortage of nurses, what does this mean? do you have to work somewhere where they want you to work or what if you dont get hired??

They have a list of facilities all over the country. You need to find openings to apply to, then contact HRSA to find out if that facility qualifies, then apply to that facility. Do not rely on the list on their website; it can change, so contact them directly and get confirmation of any facility you are considering when the time comes.

Character counts do not include spaces (this from my computer programmer husband).

The recommendation letters need to be in a sealed envelope from your (professor, mentor, community leader...) with their signature across the seal. It doesn't say if they have to be mailed separately, but I'm sure that, as long as they are in a sealed envelope that it would be okay even if they were inside your manila envelope.

As far as the work commitment, there is a search you can do on the HRSA.gov website that tells you what facilities are considered to be underserved. Pretty much everything where I live is considered underserved, with the exception of private practices (which don't generally hire new grads anyway).

Hope this helps. Good luck ladies!

Not always true (former programmer here). Sometimes character counts DO include spaces. If doing this online, there should be a counter that shows how many characters are left while typing. If the count is reduced when you put in spaces, then the character count includes spaces.

Does anyone know if they have the access to verify your EFC or is it just what you submit on the SAR? What if it changes after applying, what happens?

Thanks so much!!!

Yes, they can verify. I can't see how it would change since it is based on the previous year's income and tax return.

Hi,

Oh no. I didn't see anything about an online banking portion? Did anyone esle fill this out?

It's not exactly online banking, but it is required to supply bank info and have the money direct deposited.

I am from Tulsa, OK and got into the ORU BSN program. My EFC-O which puts me into the first funding group. I am a single mom and this would make things so less stressful on my family!
