The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

They have made it very clear that just because you got an email didn't mean you were getting the scholarship. And reading through last years posts they sent out on more then one occasion emails so I wouldn't give up hope.

Thank you. And you're right, there may be more emails, but it just doesn't look good since there were emails received on Monday and Tuesday but none since.

I'm just a little upset because my family and I really could have used the scholarship and I really would like to know what the determining factors were.

It seems like if the number of applicants with an EFC of 0 exceeds the number of available scholarships, they would look at another factor. But what? Evidently its not GPA or a first-come first-served type of thing. Reference letters? Essays? What?

Thank you..... I only said it was obvious that is not what they looked at but the primary purpose of this scholarship is to get people who want to work in the underprivileged sector through school. I believe they chose like they have all other years, luck of the draw.

And there's no saying that they didn't take these things into account and STILL have it end up a luck of the draw. Consider that perhaps the essays, the letters of rec, the GPA, etc. were all factored not in a competitive basis (i.e. "this person fits the criteria more than that person") but rather on a yes/no basis (does this person have a minimum x.xx GPA? do their essays demonstrate an interest in working with underserved communities? do their letters of rec indicate that they are a good candidate for nursing?) and then, from the pool of applicants who fulfilled all of their criteria, there had to be a draw to determine awardees.

Awww come on guys please don't fight over this. Don't let it break us down. We are all wonderful people and it will all work out. Just keep faith, stay strong and pray if you believe that way. I know that I'm going to keep staying positive until I get a rejection later. Have a great evening everyone.

I can't answer that. I don't remember if it was this years post or last years post, but someone called and asked that and they wouldn't tell them. I understand that you are upset and hopefully more emails will go out. They extended the date to Aug 23 so almost a month past what our original email said...so there is always still hope. And from what I read last year there was a group who got them and then it was like a week or 2 before the next group got them. I think we all just need to look at the fact and be thankful that we either just got accepted into nursing school or already in nursing school. That is a huge accomplishment in itself. I understand family needing it because my daughter and I can really use it...but even if I don't get the scholarship I somehow was making it before the scholarship so I will somehow make it without it.

I think we are forgetting the big picture here. It is the middle of July and school is only going to get tougher. Lets enjoy ourselves. We have no say on what HRSA does or how they choose. Let's have some good times this summer before school. I too am a single mom with an EFC of 0. I did get an email. I also have to put in all the time I can with my little man because when school starts for me again in September, he will be the one to suffer. I am going to take a deep breath and relax. If i get it I get it, if not, I will go to school anyways, just have to work a little harder at my cheap job to make ends meet. It will pay off in the end with or without HRSA. Again good luck to all. We are all winners for making it this far in our careers:redpinkhe

How do we know they haven't used GPA, Essays, reccomendations, etc on an evaluative basis?

We don't actually know. There's just some wondering going on.

How do we know they haven't used GPA, Essays, reccomendations, etc on an evaluative basis?

Exactly...they might have scored our essays with a rubric, they might have scored our GPAs, who knows!!

For those that have the time on their hands, I encourage you to check out the 2009 HRSA Nursing Scholarship thread that can be found on this website. There is so much frustration EVERY year for applicants, so it's not just us.

Just remember how much more difficult it was waiting when you applied for nursing school..and let's be thankful that we don't have to do that EVER again. :yeah:

I am with stacialynn, i am glad i am already well into nursing school:yeah:

I've started to buy scratch offs in hopes of winning something---anything that will help me pay for school... :) I have better chances of winning money there than getting the scholarship... Yeah buddy !

For what it's worth....I send out waves of prayer and love and hopefulness to everyone on this board. I sense a lot of desperation and exasperation....it's easy for us who've gotten emails to rejoice, but...let's pray and hope and cross our fingers for the ones who haven't yet...And for those of us who have gotten them? We might not get the award! It's not final...let's not forget that...the final decisions will be made and some will be lucky and some will not. Love to all...:redbeathe

I know I won't rest at all until my yes or no answer comes in the mail!

Good post!

I am trying to just relax and wait it out. We all got in to a nursing school and are getting ready to start or are already in one....that is such a huge accomplishment in and of itself! I am trying to maintain a positive attitude....if we get the scholarship...awesome because it will help financially. If not...once you graduate, you have no commitments and can pick the best/highest paying job! If we don't get the scholarship, there is more freedom in choosing where to work.
