The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

I thought it was being sent via mail. Gosh, they keep changing it! I guess that saves them postage although i'm sure they could send things for FREE since it is the government.

Mail isn't free even for government. All things cost money and mail is no different. The post office is a section of government but is run like a business. As such, the post office has to bill the other sections of government for the letters they send. This is often done through the use of mail permit numbers printed on envelopes in the area where postage is normally affixed, this allows the postal sorting machines to scan it and keep track of the volume, type and weight of each piece of mail and invoice it's postage cost to the proper account.

Alternatively for lower volume and small businesses, a Pitney-Bowes or other prepaid solution is used where it prints the postage on the envelope while deducting the cost of postage from the users prepaid postage account.

Thanks for all the info...But I was just saying since the post office is a section of the government. Not that serious.

i emailed my analyst (cf) on august 12th because i had a missed phone call..the number came up as unknown and the voicemail message was cut off before i could find out who it was calling..i wasn't sure if it was hrsa calling or if it was from a different scholarship that i applied for through my school, either way i thought i would check to be sure.

she emailed me back just a few minutes ago and said

fyi - the nsp awardees notification will be sent via email on august 23, 2010.

i hope the caps of the fyi doesn't mean she was annoyed...i didn't ask in the email what the status was of my application, i just simply said i had a missed phone call and the message started by a guy saying he was calling to get information for my recent scholarship application but then it got cut off. either way, if its true that it will be sent via email by the 23rd then that means just waiting till next monday...i'm gonna die waiting, and even then if i don't receive an email next monday i'm gonna be super worried...its too much suspense!!

way 2 much suspense

I just got that same email.. FYI - The NSP awardees notification will be sent via email on August 23, 2010. I had sent her an email a few days ago with a small question. This is what she sent. Yes it was Connie F

Classes start for me on the 23rd as well as a few others. I wonder how many of us will be paying attention to lecture and how many of us will be impulsively checking our email every 5 mins?????

Lol I will be one of those checking my email..I don't have class until 10 am on Monday so maybe Ill get lucky and hear something before then...and if that's the case I will either be way too excited to listen to class, or be way to nervous to sit there

I'm glad I'm not the only one who got that email..I felt bad enough emailing her, I didn't want to seem like I was pestering her or anything...but hey I was worried about the phone call, and never did figure out what it was from...Let's just hope they really do send out notifications on Monday

I just found out today that I need to have my Gallbladder out tomorrow (less then two weeks before school starts...good grief) Im not excited to need surgery, but boy oh boy am I glad I will be out of it for a few days to pass the wait till the 23rd! LOL. I hope we don't all explode from the wait!

I had to do the same thing two years ago right before fall semester started! I was really freaked out by the whole situation! But, two weeks later, I was able to function pretty much normally. Good luck!!

RN2BLeslie, if u don't mind my asking, was your email to her of the 'did u receive my paperwork' type, or something else. I only ask, because I emailed her the week we all faxed our paperwork and never got a response, and didn't want to get on her bad side by asking again.

The first two emails and phone calls I sent/made last month, she never responded to. This one I was just basically asking when we were going to find out about the award, if she could give me a status update and if she knew how we were going to be notified. I was going to copy the email I sent to her buy my Outlook is a POS right now and wont open...

She never has called me and my credit was pulled on the 3rd with my last name starting with A...when I originally sent my paperwork in, I tried to see if it was received but no one could verify that for me at the call center. They told me that if I had a confirmation sheet, that would be proof enough to show if someone said they didn't get it. I have checked by logging back into the HRSA website under "supporting documents" and it shows nothing needed...it says it should show docs "including banking information" on that if it is needed...don't know if that helps you or not...

Well, I never heard back from the powers-that-be. I guess that's my answer! Can't get the scholarship without having credit pulled... she can't pull credit if she's on vacation. No one else seems to be having credit pulled anymore either, I guess I could hold out hope that I'm an alternate and maybe someone will turn down the scholarship, but really I think this is just about the end of worrying about it for me.

I dunno i dont really care for the idea of being tied down for 2 years. I'm already 29 and I would really like to go back to school eventually for my CRNA or RN first assistant. Thing is you need to work in critical care for a while. If I apply for this scholarship I'm not sure how much that will get in the way. I know they give you a few choices but its not like you can request to go into a critical care setting so you can have the opportunity to go back to school. Besides my program is only 7k. Thing is I will not be working while while in the program and only have 10k left after paying for the first semester. what does everyone think

The scholarship doesn't dictate what area of the hospital you work in. You can request critical care under the scholarship's service commitment just as easily as you can without it. The only restriction is that it has to be in a facility that has a critical shortage of nursing staff. Which right now, especially in my area, is most any hospital. I know it's difficult to decide if it's worth it. I, too, am a non traditional student who would like to go straight to grad school. If I were to receive the scholarship it would require me to work full time while working on my masters.... which would be a pain... but we have four kids and my husband and I are both in school. So the possibility of the monthly stipend and eliminating further student loan debt was worth it to me. Now, of course, it doesn't look like I am going to be getting the scholarship and I can see the benefits to that as well.

I think it's a pretty personal decision. You can always apply... see what happens and buy yourself some time to make that decision. Good luck!
