Hey Krismoa,

I was just wondering, how do you obtain a LPN certification, how does it work?

Do you need to go college to get LPN of is it a self study kind of thing?

I'd actually thinking of doin' a LPN before BSN?

Any trainning required?

In WA you must be a graduate of a certified LPN school (mine is a part time 2 1/2 yr program with no school in summer) before the State board will allow you to take the NCLEX to get those letters LPN, these courses are usually at Community or technical colleges.

Then you take a few more prereqs and goto an RN course. then a bit more course work and BSN!!

Hi All!
I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.
I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.
When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.
So I want to know are there any men out there?

I am a gal nursing student in Chicago and just started my program this fall. Thee are only three men in our program, (fantastic group of 23 total). I have been on allnurses for a couple of years and it just dawned on me today to send the men in our group a link to this forum!

Hope they do, lots of information here. I am going to look around a while.

Nice to know that there are really lot's of male nursing studs here!:chuckle I'll be third yr this coming Academic Yr! Start surely of duties and lots of req....Well im a second yr student nurse here at Philippines and in our particular section there are about 12 males and 28 females!hehehe well lots of male nursing studs here at my country.......though its not their dream course.....nurses are so in demand because of shortage in US,Canada,or Europe and its a big opportunity to work abroad!:yelclap:

Hi guys, Ricky here, LPN student. 3 months to go, graduate in March. Wow the time has gone by fast. funny after all this I've wondered if I really want to be a nurse. I don't know what else I could do...that has been my life long problem...and I'm 44 years old. I worry some about working with so many women though I do see more and more males. Nothing against women mind you but they are a different breed in the work place. The work place in this country is becoming a hostile place, and women in my experience tend to sacrafice a fellow nurse to protect or advance themselves. for that ladies that are here...it never worked for us men, I doubt it will for you. I hope to work at the VA system because at least they have a union. I have seen a lot at my clinical sites, good and bad like anywhere. I hope to go from LPN to ADN, and then BS in Health Care Management. This sounds like so much phooney but it's the patients that do it for me. They are Amazingly grateful for the help they get when they are sick. --I want you guys to know that you have my respect! Hang in there.. Ricky Columbia MO

well, we have in our school also a lot male nursing students, although fewer than females...:)

The stuff I have read says about 13% of nurses are male. My class is down to about sixteen, 2 men. I am 39 and the other guy is about my sons age, 21

The only small issue I have had with being a man, was early in nursing school a few of the women, a few times perhaps, would start talking "girl talk" ie periods, cramps, sex life at home, how bad men are, that type of stuff, and then look at me and say "maybe you dont want to hear this" and I just shrugged and said "well if a little discussion on (whatever the subject) bothers me, then I should find somewhere else to spend my time than nursing school!"

Hi Guys, my name is Joe, and im from Indiana. I have just recently decided that i would like to become a nurse. For most of my life I've kind of considered it, but i never really thought about it much, cause we all know when we're younger all our friends would say "oh your such a girl if you want to be a nurse!". Well im 18 and darnet im tired of listening, i want to do something where my passion is!. :) I love helping people and I've always been interested in how to be able to help people in its own right. And what better what then to be a nurse. Just the whole idea of a never ending learning curve as being a nurse, and being able to help someone at the same time. Just appeals to me totally. I am again only 18 and ive just recently decided to be a nurse, and some people say its too early to decide what i want to do with my life. And I say, nah, If i feel strong enough about it, then i will do everything in my ability to get it done. :). I'm still a senior in highschool. not quite out yet, i got until june of 2006 and im out. And i have a few small questions right now, id like you guys to give me some input on. First off, I have the opportunity to maybe be able to take some Ivy Tech type of classes at the start of the year, to start working on my LPN early. And id like to know, with myself still in highschool. Do you think its a good idea?. Ive thought alot about it. Money will be tight but my Mom is backing my entirely, and i have a job, i just wanted to see what u guys would say. Second, so far the best plan ive got is going to Ivy Tech for two years, to get my Bachelors Associates in Nursing,(or whatever not sure). and then getting a job at Ball Hospital, and if im lucky they will pay for me to go back to school at Ball State and get my RN. So what do you guys think? is that a good idea?. or a good setup to go by? I dunno,, im so glad i was able to stumble across the forum, its gonna be my best friend for a while :). Congrats, Joe, on your decision. If you look around, there are financial opportunities available. Many such programs often involve "we pay, you stay (for awhile)". Not bad, considering the cost of school. Just look around. I personally went the military route originally. The Army paid for my BSN. "We pay, you stay". The same opportunity involved my MSN (my state county footed the bill with the same type of deal). Saved me a bundle. My MSEd was the only thing out of my pocket. Not bad, not bad at all. So, look around, keep your ears open, and even interview if need be. Things are out there. But, you have to find them. Your plan, thus far, sounds good. But continue to keep your eyes open. Well I am doing my prereqs right and plan on getting my ASN then my BSN and finally becoming a NP, i have a long way to go so hopefully i will get all three before Im 30, Im 21 now.
