Nursing Students Male Students

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

Tim - your post is very interesting to me. At this time I am considering the NP route, but have not made a decision as of yet. I am going to finish my MSN so I can teach and become tenured faculty, but wanted to remain in practice as an NP. I understand the respnobility over compensation, but was not aware that the market is becoming saturated with NP's. Is this a geographic issue or is this in the US in general from your estimation?

Thanks for the info, interested to hear more about this from you. Patrick

I am new to the nursing world, I am currently taking A&P while working as an engineer....

I was wondering how the role of an NP would differ from a clinical nurse specialist. Any info would be great, or some good sites to check out. Thanks

My boyfriend is entering a 2 year nsg program, and he is currently looking for financial assistance. Can anyone offer any information as to where he can apply? Thank you.

Patrick:

In most major metropolitan areas where NP programs have sprouted up like weeds, yes... the market is saturating. I know in the area I am living in, two times per year, two colleges push out anywhere from 4 to 10 NP's each. The jobs that they are finding are not advanced practice jobs. I know one person who told me she was going to work in a doctors office as the NP. She was quite disappointed as her NP position is nothing more than the responsibilities of the typical office nurse... she's not even getting decent money to do it!

If you are prepared to move to the rural areas and provide NP care to medically underserved populations... then you should not have much trouble finding a job. However, those areas tend to be medically underserved for a reason; either reimbursement levels are too low, or the place is just plain pathetic, in a Gilligans Island sort of way.

I am a guy and an old diploma nurse, class of 1979. When I started nursing school way back then, our class began with 102 students of which 8 were men. Three years later we graduated 51 and only two of us men were left. It is great to see more men entering the nursing field. Unfortunately, there still doesn't seem to be a very strong attraction for anyone especially men to enter the nursing profession. I am currently working on my BSN through online study.

Thanks for the info Tim .... perhaps I need to explore the CRNA route a little closer. :)

I have not been on for a while as I have been moving here to San Antonio to start a nursing degree here. I still have a lot to do before I can even get to the application phase for Nursing school but I have fought to get here so that I could pursue my career. I am 31 yrs old and father of 3 and have been married for 11 yrs now. I have completed a criminal justice degree only because it fits my current position in the military. My current job here in San Antonio will allow me the opportunity to pursue my Nursing degree and UTSA has a fine Medical Center I can go to pursue that degree. So add another guy to list.

Hey,

That is great you are pursuing nursing. Are you going to remain in the military after you get your nursing degree? I am planning a trip to San Antonio this March. I was going to check out a military hospital because I had thought of going into the Air Force and was wanting to talk to some Air Force nurses and get their opinion on life in the Air Force as a nurse. :) Take care!!

Great verse Meco..

I'm having such a tough decision right now about what to do in life.

What is is this?Testosterone central? 40's male here, 3kids, Back in school doing the RN-BSN thing...a whirlwind!...been nursing 14 years.....never been unemployed, except by MY choice...never a dull moment and and never the same day twice!
