i just graduated and took the board there were six of us out of a class of 40 i was told by other male nurse to be careful in the hospital you work don't appear sexist and avoid having clandestine affairs with you co-workers hang out withe the travel nurses there are only there temporarily and enjoy meetin new people the men are coming we all need to stick together

Hey guys:

Anybody that is currently attending school how do you feel you are looked upon from physicians as male nurse. The reason I ask is that I am currently in the medical sales field and hate the travel involved. I am looking to make a career change and I have been considering being a nurse for awhile. The treat us reps pretty much like garbage, I am wondering what it will be like as a male nurse. Any comments or suggestions please feel free to respond.

Most docs, after they figure out that you're not intimidated, don't hassle you at all. However, there will always be those who are threatened no matter what your job classification. You just have to get over "the doc is God" thing and then you can work with almost anyone. They too are only human like you, and we all make mistakes. Some might even bridge the gap and become real friends.

Actually I'm pretty good friends with my gastro doc, he's a great guy.

You are his patient/customer agent. He is selling you somethng it is to his benefit to get along with you. For me working in arural ER we only have a couple of docs that are a-holes and yes you guessed they are surgeons. OH well I know I prep the patient as much as possible and the of course the paperwork for them.

Hi,

I'm 44yo dad of 2 (19 and 20). I worked for IBM for 20 years (practically to the day) when I was laid off. I'm currently enrolled in A&P 1, looking to start my clinicals in spring of 2004. I'm currently a F/T employee for an amulance company as a dispatcher and finished my EMT schooling the past summer.
