I will start next semester in a BSN program I have spent so long working on this and hopefully i will be done in the next 2 years. I want to work for a couple of years and then go to PA school or med school depending. I have taken the higher level science classes that would be needed for a pre med degree or pre PA so I am hoping nursing will help my application process into one or the other I have not decided yet on either. However I know I am going to love nursing as I love helping people and I am the biggest science nerd you guys have ever seen, I read pathology reports and do microscopy as a hobby.

I was a clinical massage therapist and certified neuromuscular therapist before deciding to go back to school I have been driving a school bus in Gwinnett county Ga. For the last 4 years I am 28 married with a 16 year old step son ( hehe my wife is touch older than I and brilliant she is finishing her PhD in music ed)

I am a 38 year old male nursing student, one of 8 males in a class of 48 students.

This is my second career change, I started out helping build homes for a local builder then changed to selling homes as a realtor.

For the past year I have been taking a lot of the courses required for nursing (A&P, biology, chem, nutrition, etc.)

I started the actual nursing classes in my local community colleges RN program 4 weeks ago.

We actually start going to the hospital next Wednesday.

Hey guys,

I want to join the "guy's club". Here the short version of my story....

I'm 26 going on 27 in December student in los angeles. I recieved my BS in biology from California State University los angeles in 2003. I started out as a prevet. I applied and got accepted into vet school in 2002 but due to my residency status I was unable to pay for tuition. I was down and depress for several months until I met my friend who was an RN. She adviced me to look up nursing as an alternative. I did...and felt in love with it for several reasons....first .....RN makes pretty good money in CA, second it can help me with my immigration status, second I can still use my knowledge in biology for the job.

At the moment I'm working on my Human Physiology and hope to get accepted into the program in spring 2004.

....and that's all folks.

just wanted to give a shout out to all the guys here on the board.

What kind of schedule are you keeping with two kids? I mean, when do you study? I am only taking some of my pre-reqs now like Child Growth and Development, and a US Hisory class, and I am already finding it tough to study. I dont start studying until like 9 or 10pm. I dont get home from work until after 6, then eat, play with the kids for an hour or so, and then put them to bed. Its real tough to get started studying at 9 at night...

I cant even imagine what it will be like when I have to take the A&P class, or Pharmacology...IM GOING TO GO OUT OF MY MIND......

I have the same situation. I cannot study until 9 pm or so, and then by that time I really have to try to motivate myself.

I don't think there's anything special that can be done. I should start A&P in Jan and I'll really have to buckle down then.

I've been doing this for 2 years now, so I should be used to it. Just got my AS and now decided to go Nursing instead of pre-med.

I have 51 day's left and I'm finished, well for now anyway. I'll be going to my local colledge to get my RN next. I'm a glutten for punishment I suppose.

Has anyone else noticed that most of the women Nurses love to see men Nurses?

Gawd I feel the same way.

I think I'll be happy in nursing, there's a good deal of flex in the position :)

btw I hate tech support as well

Hi Everyone,

I'm yet another 36 yr old career changer. I'm entering an accelerated BSN program at Drexel/Hahnemann that is only 11 months long. If you already have a BA/BS in anything and are considering nursing then you should check out the accelerated programs. I had to take a bunch of prereq but got them all finished with the help of CLEP, online, and summer sessions. So I highly recommend CLEP and Excelsior college for many prereqs that we may have to complete. I finished Human Growth & Dev, English 2, Ethics, AP 1&2, and Nutrition all during the summer by this method. Now I just have microbiology this Fall and start in March 2004. I know a few women in the program and they all say it's great but very intense. I also got word that there is a 40% drop out rate. I hope to work in either an ER or ICU after graduating and getting a MSN or CRNA like every other guy here it seems. I'd say good luck to all but I don't believe in luck, so study hard and stay focused. We'll all make it and maybe work together in the future.

Hey fellas!

Another curious chick, here. I've been nurse for over 6 years. Always need male nurses. You all know what you're getting yourselves into, right? Working in a field dominted by women is a challenge in itself. We need you guys to keep the balance. I find that most units lose male nurses to more techical specialty areas. We do love having you around, nevertheless. You guys are brave. I much prefer working with men than women, in general. Keep things simple and comical. That always makes a shift better. My favorite shift was a 3-11 shift on a telemetry/post MI unit. I was the only gal. The guys showed such teamwork. No fiddling around or griping about lack of staffing. Just getting it done and offering help. I never laughed so much at work as I did that night. At the end of the shift, we were all charting at the nurses' station, they were so silly. I totally gained a new respect and I felt like I was at a slumber party. HeHe. Best of luck to you all.
