The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

Thanks jansgal ;)

Thank you jansgalRN that was so nice to hear. Hopefully I will meet a lot of wonderful Nurses like you :)

You are a breathe of fresh air ;)

I'm almost finished with school and I know there is a ton more to learn. All of my pt's in my clinical rotations love me, I cant wait to acually finish and start working. This is the best thing I have ever done with my life. And to get the oppurtunity to acually make a change in someones life is wonderful. I cant see myself doing anything else. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

Next task is to get my RN, my LPN is just a stepping stone.

Hey guys, I'm fairly new to this site. I'm male, and taking my prereqs, anatomy 1 and basic algebra this semester, next its' anatomy 2, and intermediate algebra. Next fall, I start the part time LPN program, then when I finish that, will roll into the RN.

I've noticed in my classes I'm one of the few guys. Doesn't really bother me, since I've always gotten along better with women than men mostly anyway. Not sure why that is, though it drives my wife nuts sometimes lol.

Hey Guys, I'm a female taking my pre-reqs but just wanted to say I am looking forward to working with my male counterparts...I have trouble relating to women even though I try really hard! I refuse to talk about nails and hair, and I hate gossip. I'm not trying to lump all females together, don't get me wrong! I'm just biased right now because I work with a dozen catty females and can't wait to get out and work with some men, haha.

Take care y'all...guys and gals.

Hey FutureArmyNurse taje a look at the Navy as well. I was a corspman in the nav and loved it. If I was younger I would consider going back in after i finish school but I will be too old.

Agent how many credits are you taking?? And does your spouse work outside the house?

Only one class this semester, but my wife works nights so I have to take classes around that now..

it sucks

Glad I found this thread. My wife (a nurse) and I had a serious talk last weekend about job prospects for me in the future and we've decided I should quite working and go back to school full time to get an ADN. So, I've started the process of looking around the Dallas area for a good school. It's been a long time since I was in college and I'm pretty nervous about the whole thing but I'm also getting REALLY tired of getting laid off every 2 or 3 years and looking for another job.

But, my wife tells me that a man who's an RN, has a BS in business, and can speak some Spanish should be in big demand. I'm hoping I can change my song from "Give me a job" to "Show me the money" in a couple of years.

Meanwhile, any words of wisdom from anyone in the Dallas area on a good strategy for me? I'd like to get started in the fall of 2004.

Thanks,

Ned

Another question..... I just finished reading all the posts and it looks like I'm the grandfather of this group. Anyone out there get started at my age (51) or older?

I'm also trying to learn/enhance my spanish skills?

Any tips for someone who lives much further north as in chicago??

Fortunately I already have a basis for for it - I speak Portuguese. And, it's pretty easy to speak Spanish in Dallas. I guess just find a way to use the language as much as possible. I also listen to Spanish radio when I can and that helps.

Or... you could move to Mexico! The weather is better there!

No crap. Last time I was in cancun, I didnt want to leave.

I have audio books for spanish, french, german, and russian right now and I'm trying to gain use of all of them

Just wanted to say hey!

I am a career changer as well, after having worked 15 years in the IT industry and being laid off every 2 to 3 years.... I just cant do it anymore. After speaking to a friend of mine who is a nurse practitioner I am now convinced that the nursing field may be the way to go. I am just now starting my Pre-Reqs and it seems like it's going to be a long and difficult road ahead... I'm hoping to not to have to work while in school but I am curious if a hospital would hire someone without any nursing experience as a nurses aid? I would like to get some exposure to nursing while I am in school. Are there any work study programs for the nursing student? Should I look into volunteer work? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

- Don
